Amazon's new $50 tablet

It's like they found a stash of 2012 tablets in a warehouse somewhere, and rebranded them.

Race to the bottom.

1024x600 resolution is really just too low for a tablet. Seems like a better choice would be to buy a used Nexus 7 or something. I see the original used Nexus 7 is going for as little as $55 on eBay (buy it now) and it runs Android 5.1.

amazon will sell a shit load of these though. Didnt the original Fire have a higher resolution than this?

1st gen Kindle Fire had the same resolution, slightly worse PPI.

169PPI for original kindle fire, 171 PPI for the new $50 Fire.

The original also weighed more, and had a much slower CPU.

Now that the tablet is out, has anyone here got a hold of one? How is the performance on this thing?

I want to get one for my kid, since she broke my Nexus 7.

That looks suspiciously like the original Fire from years ago. Did they just lower the price in hopes of clearing warehouse space?

The original Fire from years ago had a hilariously underpowered *everything* and ran Android 2.3 at its best. This is a totally different device with much more modern hardware. What's with the completely uninformed ramblings?

I am thinking of getting the more expensive kid's tablet for my six yr old granddaughter, if it comes with a case it will be ready to go & will save my daughter additional expense. Still looking for better tablets for my adult son and 14 yr old grandson.

My son is still using the last seven inch Amazon HDX and is disappointed they didn't release a new version.

The $49 7" Kindle Fire and $99 Kindle Fire Kid Proof edition are the same hardware. The only difference is the case, the extended warranty, and some additional software for kiddos.

The Nexus 9 ($320) is what I would get if you are looking for Android. Otherwise the iPad Mini 4 ($400), iPad Air 2 ($500), or a Surface 3 ($500 for just the tablet) if you don't mind looking at iOS and Windows, respectively.

And yet if its dirt cheap, is a perfectly useful resolution for a tablet. Just because you can get 1080p tablets now does not mean that 600p is useless. It is more then fine if you have nothing to begin with, but these are tablets that you don't "upgrade" too, for sure.

Honestly, the 600p screen doesn't look bad in most cases. I only really notice the crummy screen resolution in Amazon's Washington Post news app because the text looks like crap.
