You need to pay regular shipping to get the same speed as Barnes and Noble's free shipping. I go with Barnes and Noble if the prices aren't much different for just that reason. B&N also allows me to take merchandise back to their physical store and doesn't deduct shipping price. Amazon charges for the free shipping with a return. Bastards.

Only if you decide you don't want the item. Return shipping is free is the item is damaged. Hell, you never return any broken glass items.

Bastards is a relative opinion. Bastards compared to whom?

Barnes and Nobel. It's not the return shipping charge that upsets me. It's them taking an initial shipping charge out of the money returned when it was free shipping.

Amazon has already paid once to ship it at no cost to you. You gotta pay if the reason to return is your choice, ie not damaged.

As was previously mentioned, if the item is damaged, no charge to return it. Free shipping to you or not. When you no longer want it, you gotta pay. Either fuel and time to B&N or a partial refund when shipping back to Amazon.
You do realize the UPS label is free to print and you can schedule UPS to pick it up, then your refund is minus Amazon's cost to ship back, not retail cost. You never have to leave the house.

It's not like the shipping prep and transit time are a secret. Before you click the 'place my order' button, you see exactly how long it will take to receive your item depending on your choice.

I have found those numbers to be very inaccurate. I have had the item in my hand several days before the first "estimated ship date" listed on my order. I know that only helps my case to use the free shipping, but maybe others have found those estimated dates to be too optimistic.

Well, as others have said...The ship date is when you will have it by. Your order goes super-low priority until then. So if UPS or whoever gets around to it before then, good....but generally you shouldn't see anything after that date.
