Amazon to Offer Same-Day Delivery, Could Pummel Brick-and-Mortar Retailers

Amazon is now collecting sales tax in some states in exchange for more distribution centers for same-day shipping options

Amazon is currently working on same-day shipping methods for customers, which would send a package out only a few hours after the order is placed according to Slate. How is Amazon doing this? By opening more distribution centers, and putting a lot of money into these new centers to make them efficient. This is likely an expansion of Amazon's existing Local Express Shipping option which provides same-day delivery to a handful of large U.S. cities.

What's next? A place where people can actually go to see and purchase items without having to pay for them to be delivered?😵

At what cost? I could see this being useful but rarely worth the $$.

It could be at zero cost. Amazon needs more capacity, they could build up existing facilities, or they could build one near a major city where they don't already have a presence. Cost is nearly the same either way, but by building into a new area they can offer cheaper faster shipping.

Though the one indirect cost is that customers in that place now absolutely need to pay sales tax.

We're getting a distribution center about an hour away. The agreement was that Amazon didn't have to collect sales tax for 5 years in exchange for promising 2000 jobs. They did send me an email totaling all of my purchases for 2011.

That's f*cked up. Other businesses create jobs yet they don't get the price advantage Amazon gets when selling things.

We need the jobs.

The politicians almost F-ed it up by threatening Amazon to nix the project. The walmarts/homedepots/lowes/etc padded the pols pockets so they would vote against the project the 1st time around. Amazon then promised 2K jobs instead of the original 1200 and it passed. I'll be voting democrat for our local house rep this time.

I bought this yesterday and paid $3.99 for same-day delivery. I ordered somewhere between 8 and 9am and it arrived around 3pm. I'm happy.

Due to my proximity to one of their warehouses, most of my deliveries already come next day even when they ship it ground.

OK, wait a minute, you are going to charge me tax just because some other people might want to pay for and get same day delivery? Screw you, I am driving to B&M... it was nice while it lasted, adios Amazon

amazon is seeing how the law is going and is actually pushing for 1 uniform sales tax collection law across the country.

that regulation is actually good for amazon because its brand is strong enough it doesn't need the advantage anymore over B&Ms. but potential new competitors don't have that.

No, you have it backwards. They are being forced to charge you tax by the state, and if they are, they might as well expand their operations in that state so they can offer same day delivery.

No. Your state wants the sales tax and wants Amazon to collect it since you owe it. You'll pay it at a B&M anyway.

Depends on when I need it. Prime gets a lot of my business because most things I don't need right now.

Someone needs to get the Governor of Colorado on the phone immediately.

This would be an inventory nightmare for many suppliers, particularly smaller ones. Now they would have to keep large stocks in dozens more warehouses. And who pays the price for items that don't sell and/or become obsolete while they sit? I'd have to guess it would be the suppliers.

you realize if you aren't paying sales tax on purchases from amazon what you are doing is illegal anyway....right?

Also when you do B&M you pay more... you pay tax.... AND you have to drive there anyway wasting more of your time, and gas if you are worried about cost.

The goal of Amazon is to figure out how to deliver something before you buy it.

So you're going to burn your time and gas money driving to B&M, and will still pay the same tax there... This is benefit you how, exactly? 😕

Nothing unique to Amazon. States/counties/townships compete with each other all the time in tax wars to lure companies to build there. Nissan got a huge break to build factories in TN. I know townships that have freezes on taxes for new home construction to lure in people to build because they want families to move in to increase school district numbers. In a city near where I am they are offering Target and Costco huge tax breaks to build there instead of on the other side of the river in another town.

It's not illegal until the state deems it so. There are a multitude of states that still don't charge sales tax.

The bottom line is I don't care about the shipping, whoever can give me the lowest price will win my money.

Didn't this exist in years ago as Kosmo.com or something? And didn't it fail miserably? Wonder if it will last this time around.
