I just got finished posting a review of a camera I bought (grabbed it at Wal-Mart, was in the need for a decent camera for someone that needed it ASAP) .. it definitely inspired me to write this review :

Anyone else write a review of something on Amazon that they'd like to share? Or have found a review they found particularly funny or interesting?

Entire review system is broke. Between people that review things without long term usage and companies paying people to write reviews for them without even owning the product....

Review = just another marketing scheme....

i got a review of 1 star for an app i wrote and posted on amazon. the app is a guide for a video game and says "GUIDE" in the title of the app. the person's review was a 1 liner saying "this is the guide when is the game going to come out for tablets?".

I wrote a review for OMSI Omnibus Simulator.

I marked both of your reviews helpful. I especially found the OP's review hilarious.

You might be right in your arguments - I've heard some get paid, and also seen reviews that are way off point, but I believe the sheer volume of reviews evens things out. And the idea is to listen to somebody else and find out why they like it, or not, just as I'd do with a neighbor. If he did not like the mountain bike because the store did not assemble it for him, that's input too, even if not very informative.

I write a lot of reviews, just to pay-forward, because I use others' reviews a lot in deciding on a product, but I won't bore you with those links. But for interesting reviews, here are two. (I was just looking at some bazooka-sized lenses more for the fun of it because I'd never buy them unless I hit a powerball) :

a. First, take a look at this lens :Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L Super Telephoto Lens, marvel at it's price, size and reach. Then read this review.

b. Similarly, see this Nikon 800mm, then this short but sweet review.

There are more such, but only remembered these for now.

What I do to adjust for that is read far more of the negative reviews than the positive ones. It's easy to weed out the user error or frivolous negatives and the inauthentic positives if you pay attention. I think all you should really be interested in are the specifics of the negatives anyway. There's no incentive for the company to be paying people for negative reviews, so unless they're paid by the competition for the product they're likely being honest at least. Besides we know from the nature of the product itself what supposed to happen if it works, the only thing we could conceivably be interested in for the purpose of deciding whether to buy it is if and how it doesn't work.

I gave a 4-star review to the Blackberry Playbook and had my ass handed to me by fanboys.

I dont review controversial items any more.

That's the difficult thing. I like useful reviews on Amazon (sometimes rare) and Newegg, for example. But there is abuse, for sure. I was reading the other day about companies hiring people to write negative reviews about their competitors on Yelp. How do you even combat that? First thought would be to use the "real name" or "verified reviewer" system, but even that can be hard to manage.

Plus, I wouldn't want my real name linked to my reviews - I write honest reviews on Yelp, for example, so when a place is good, I'll praise it, but when it's bad, I'll tear into them without mercy, especially if they're a really crappy place. I would really rather not have my name & photo linked to a terrible review of a place if I'm not a paid columnist for a newspaper

I just did quite a few last week actually. I mostly write when I have something good to say. I don't try to make mine funny or witty tho. Mostly just user based experience with the item being reviewed.

Good review, marked helpful!

I don't write very many reviews, I just try to be informative and good honest feedback. The Vivitar was so horrible that I simply had to let people know to try to save someone else the same horrible fate that I had. It's my only 1-star review :) They really need a zero-star option.

Vivitar, digital lens, LOL. :)

For inexpensive cameras you should probably stick to one of these brands: Canon, Sony, Olympus, Nikon, Fujifilm, Panasonic.

Oh definitely. I learned my lesson from this one, will definitely do my homework next time. At least some of the pain is my fault for not checking for a review, which would have told me that it was garbage. I wasn't even expecting much, just something that mirrored the experience of a mediocre cell phone camera. What I got what quite amazingly terrible. I once got a 'camera' for $20 marked down to $0 with instant savings at some store, I think it was Fry's like 10 years ago. It was like 1.3 megapixels, took four AA batteries, had no expandable memory, no flash, was just crazy cheap. But you know what? It took FAR better pictures than this Vivitar did, hahah. You could at least tell what you took a picture of, and in the right lighting, they looked fairly okay.

I got the Vivitar for a friend who had a car accident and needed to take a series of pictures for insurance purposes, they don't have a decent cell phone, so I thought I'd be a nice guy and buy them a passable camera that they could also take family pictures with. No dice. Ah well, will return/exchange later.

Well, it is vivitar. Funny thing is I bought a vivitar digital camera around 5 years ago, the vivicam T25 or something like that, from newegg. It was 60 bucks and 12mp so I thought, what the hell, its cheap and vivitar so i didnt expect much. To my surprise the camera was/is excellent. Full metal body and real optical zoom. Has loads of features. I think this camera was made when vivitar was getting into digital and sold it cheap to get a leg into the market. Anyway, it still is in use to this day and I still think its great.

Shit man, you should know better. No digital camera under a hundred dollars has ever been worth a damn.
