Amazon Prime price increase to $139 soon.

A price increase for Amazon Prime was announced during Amazon’s earnings report on Thursday. The price change will go into effect on Feb. 18, 2022, and for current Prime members, the new price will apply after March 25, 2022, on the date of their next renewal.

An annual Prime subscription will go from $119 to $139. For those who subscribe on a month-to-month basis, the price will be increased from $12.99 per month to $14.99 per month. The Prime Student price is also reportedly going up from $59 per year to $69 per year.

$139 to have your items shipped in a plastic bag.

Well, you do actually get video content, limited music library access, and free PC games along with your items shipped in sometimes very puzzling fashions... it does have me thinking of cancelling at last though.

Yeah, that's one of the biggest issues for me with nearly every order, and it just keeps getting worse.

The "Two-day shipping" has been bullshit for more than just the pandemic, too. The only items that ever arrive in 2 days are the select items that come from the Amazon warehouse in-state, 120 miles away. Otherwise it's 3-5 days, and that's for in-stock items that ship within a day or two.

Isn't that false advertising? They're not providing what the subscription fee is supposed to be giving you. I've asked their CSRs this question, and they give a BS excuse about it being, "2 days from when it ships, not 2 days from your order". It's still a bullshit story, because items still take longer than that in transit.

No issues with the 2-day shipping for here in NY. Most likely depends where you live of course.

I started Prime subscription at $75 and now it's almost double. Yikes. I offset it with the old BoA Better Balance Rewards card that gives $25 back every quarter and the Chase 5% Amazon purchases, but still it's a bit on the high side. I wonder if all the returns they deal with cost them enough to force this or if it's really just business cost inflation.

I may keep it just because of the extra 2% CC rewards. With our expenditures with Amazon yearly, it covers most of it. But they are pushing the limit for me for sure.

I don't, and will never pay to shop there, but my shipments come pretty fast. I ordered some herring and a phone case Monday afternoon, and got it Wednesday. I got the herring so I could get the free shipping, but whatever. I like herring, and It'll get eaten.

Even without prime I've had packages show up in like 2 days so I don't see the value in paying tbh. It's hit and miss though, really depends if it's shipping direct from Amazon or from China. The ones from China can take months and I don't think prime would change that. I have not bought much at Amazon at all throughout the pandemic. Actually anything I bought I made sure it came from within the country since the supply chains are all messed up. I try to find discrete online stores that are based here.

It depends on how much you order. We get 2 - 3 things a week from Amazon, even at $1 (average) shipping per package, that a win. We also stream a fair amount of content from Prime Video. Just crunching the numbers, $139 still saves us money. But since my membership renews in early March, I'll just renew a week earlier for $119.

Of items ordered, 90% comes in 2 days, and probably half of that comes in 1 day. That's fine, unless you're a millennial momma's boy that has a melt down if you don't get "instant gratification" for everything.

I also pay for membership at Sam's club, and come out ahead both in savings on items, and the rebate I get every January, which this year exceeded the Plus membership fee.

In Connecticut I get a lot of stuff next day and nearly anything I order from Amazon is 2-3 days max 99% of the time.

Still freaking ships in a baggie though! 😕
Here in central FL Ive had many items same day and almost never more than 3 unless it's not in stock yet. i don't care about the plastic bag as long as it's only certain items, socks, underwear, lawnmower belt, yea, I don't care, now if they ship a new printer in one we've got a problem!.

We live out past the backside of BFE. SOME items we get in two days, some in 3, while still others get delivered in a week or more.

Because we have very few local buying options, (Walmart is the only thing "local" and that's 25 miles away) so we do quite a bit of shopping at Amazon. This price increase is terrible. We started with Prime when it was $79...this pushes the price to nearly double that. I watch a few shows now and then on Prime Video and a few on Netflix...which has gone up dramatically in recent years as well. Since I get far more benefits from Prime than from NetFlix, I may drop that one.

Although there are different causes of inflation, rising labor costs are a big one. In Amazon's holiday quarter results, they lost money on their core e-commerce business. As usual, AWS carried the day and they realized a massive profit from their stake in Rivian (presumably they sold at a really good time, the stock has tanked).

Prime is nice to have, but certainly something many people can live without (just order $25 at a time instead).

Ten orders with Amazon and nine have been third party. They arrived on or before their due date. The one Amazon order was a next day item that arrive in 2-3 days.

I'm really not sure why they are increasing their prices right now....inflation hitting their operating cost?

I'll probably stick with it. Items I get in plastic bags are fine in plastic bags. Amazon has done pretty well packing other things better as needed, or when orders are combine they toss them in a box with val pak. Anything busted (very rare) gets returned.

The plastic bags cut down on the number of boxes, which is good in my book. Unfortunately I don't think my recycling provider accepts Amazon bags so they just go in the trash.

I'm guessing it's because of the things they keep adding to it. Though I don't like how it doesn't matter if you use 1 or 10.

I rely on Amazon for a lot of things, including Amazon Fresh. I am in Boston so things arrive quickly, I only get small items in plastic bags.

Well, that's a shame. All users shouldn't have to pay more money to support things like Music and TV. To be honest, Amazon Prime Video is the worst of the bunch and we hardly ever watch it. They need tiered plans depending on the services you use. I'd only pay for the 2-day shipping, if given the option.

Cancelled prime years ago and haven't looked back. If I need something quick, I go to a store; otherwise, it can almost surely wait. Most of my free shipping stuff comes within a week anyway, since I'm in a large metro area.

As for video benefits - I feel like I could either wait for a free trial to watch what I want, sign up for a short stint and binge the videos I want, or borrow a friend or family member's account.

I get 5% cash back using the Amazon card, it's the default payment method. Is that dependent on my Prime membership? I'm kind of new to Prime, only been on it for ~18 months.

I did that for years and years and one day 18 months ago accepted the 30 day free Prime trial and didn't cancel. It was during the pandemic when I wasn't going in the stores, so it made more sense to stick with it. Started ordering a shit ton of stuff off Amazon. That's faded to a relative trickle and figure I should consider cancelling what with the $20 price jump (17% I guess). It is kind of a drag always upping the total to the minimum $25 to get the free shipping. It's just a lot of juggling and clicking. I don't remember paying Amazon to ship me anything.
I've been meaning to cancel again. Might as well now. See how long I can do it for.
Unless I'm mistaken, if you get the automatic renewal (which is quite a bit cheaper than monthly) you have to call them to cancel Prime.

Always tempting to cancel it but the extra 3% back at Whole Foods pays for at least half of the prime fee over a year vs my usual 2% Fidelity card. I have also mostly been using Amazon lately for super cheap things I can’t find elsewhere … getting my cart to $25 for those orders would be a waste of money as would paying for shipping. Like it or not it’s still worth it due to the Chase 5% card. They have had a handful of decent shows too but the streaming service is generally one of the weakest.
