$50/year 4G LTE data plan for the 8.9" HD.

That's their killer app right there.

Well most devices especially laptops have cut costs by not including 5ghz support or multiple antennae. Most laptops support "n" but just 2.4ghz "n". Cramming better wireless support in even smaller devices is a great move for providing a smoother feeling to some things like HD streaming.

dont you also have to have a router that supports that?

Items are now up for pre-order on Amazon.

Getting a Kindle Paperwhite.

I was thinking the same, but then I see that the internal storage has been cut down to 2GB. They also apparently got rid of the speakers on the new one, so one of my friend will probably be pissed when he finally has to upgrade and loses the text-to-speech function.

I'm generally not satisfied with the Kindle Keyboard case with the corner light. It adds a lot of bulk and weight to the device, so the front lighting would be great, but I may just have to wait and see a floor model at a Best Buy or something now. I also get annoyed by the dust collecting on the screen of my current Kindle, so I'm probably going to be really annoyed by fingerprints.

does the Kindle fire HD have a microphone? I saw all this about doing skype, but nothing explicity stating it has a microphone... references to 'skype video calls' makes me say '....look at people without being able to speka to them? what?'

I think the obvious conclusion to be taken from that is that it does have a microphone.

it would have been friggin awesome if it was 4G for the 1st 250MB, and then 2G for say, 1GB or so... then that would allow for basic emailing after watching your 2-3 Youtube HD videos :p

I'll likely pick up a Kindle Paperwhite, but am very intrigued by the Fire HD tablets, especially if they can be rooted. I have iOS devices already, and want to check out Android as well.

The lack of speakers caught me too. What I actually started doing was I would have the Kindle read me a book during my long car trips. At the same time though, I found the speaker volume to be a bit weak. In the end, as long as they retained the headphone hookup I think that would be ok.

The cut in memory doesn't bother me. There's nothing to store on the Kindle other than books.

I'll probably be in for a Wifi no-ad version myself. I've got a 3G Kindle 3 at the moment and I agree with you that the case light is a bit ackward and does not satisfactorily illuminate the entire screen. Now that I am no longer living overseas and doing so much travel the 3G isn't a big selling point for me.

The Fire 9" HD looks like a real winner too.

Exactly, until they outline what the overage costs are, we won't know if it is actually worth it. Though I imagine that it would still come out less than a comparable iPad with 4G.

I am looking forward to seeing if the iPad Mini comes out, because if it has 4G and GPS, then uh-oh, carputer!

I was just doing some quick math...

An 8.9" Kindle Fire HD screen is 192 x 120 mm, which for a 1920 x 1200 screen means that it's exactly 10 pixels per mm, which in turn corresponds exactly to their 254 ppi statement.

BTW, from that you can calculate the bezel size, as we know that the unit is 240 mm x 160 mm.

8.9" HD, good hardware, good price for $299 WiFi model. Suspect software.
Best product is probably the Paperwhite e-reader. Good hardware, software, and price.

7" Fire HD still can't compete with Nexus 7. Amazon can't write tablet software. Until Amazon proves otherwise, good hardware can't overcome bad software.

I would buy the 8.9" HD for the hardware if hackers can get fully working AOSP rom developed for it. But by that time, there will be other native Android tablets for $300 with similar or better hardware.
