Until I hit Amazon.com, I didn't even realize there was a non-4G 16GB 8.9" Fire HD available for $299. That should make anyone looking at a $249 16GB Nexus 7 think twice.
It's pretty sad that Amazon is the first Android tablet with 1920x1200.

And Acer A700.
Bingo
So yeah, Amazon was first... if you ignore the rest of the market anyway.
Eh, as awesome as the display on the 8.9 is the SoC is really weak for such a high resolution and I don't really expect Amazons software to help things any. Plus the Nexus 7 still has Jellybean and the Play Store which counts for a lot.

I know they both announced at the beginning of the year with paper launch. But is it even out and available for sale anywhere?
Amazon's device has some serious OS limitations, and it doesn't run Jelly Bean underneath either.Interestingly enough, I think that the super cheap tablets from Google and Amazon will basically scare everyone else from making Android tablets. I mean, how can you try to compete and make money on hardware when Google and Amazon will use their other business to heavily subsidize their products?
This is why an OS vendor competing with its hardware partners has never worked very well.

AnandTech sez the new entry model Fire is way smoother than either of the HD models.Amazon's device has some serious OS limitations, and it doesn't run Jelly Bean underneath either.

They may be cheaper to buy but consider that it is likely impossible to re-sell them later. My son has indicated he'd prefer an android tablet for Christmas, he's a college student. I'm debating the merits of this, wondering if there will be discounts on textbooks.

It's pretty sad that Amazon is the first Android tablet with 1920x1200. And at awesome price to boot. Asus, Acer, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and others should be ashamed that e-retailer is beating them to the punch. What in the world were these companies thinking releasing 10" tablets with 1280x800 in 2012? D:

I want the 3G Paperwhite model. How can I convert the ebooks I've already purchased from B&N so they work properly on a Kindle?
The 8.9" model has not yet been FCC approved.
So can we call it premature specification (albeit intentional)?
