Until I hit Amazon.com, I didn't even realize there was a non-4G 16GB 8.9" Fire HD available for $299. That should make anyone looking at a $249 16GB Nexus 7 think twice.

Eh, as awesome as the display on the 8.9 is the SoC is really weak for such a high resolution and I don't really expect Amazons software to help things any. Plus the Nexus 7 still has Jellybean and the Play Store which counts for a lot.

It's pretty sad that Amazon is the first Android tablet with 1920x1200. And at awesome price to boot. Asus, Acer, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and others should be ashamed that e-retailer is beating them to the punch. What in the world were these companies thinking releasing 10" tablets with 1280x800 in 2012? D:

The Fire HD does make the iPad Mini and it's 1024x768 screen seem antiquated... and they haven't even announced it yet!

Interestingly enough, I think that the super cheap tablets from Google and Amazon will basically scare everyone else from making Android tablets. I mean, how can you try to compete and make money on hardware when Google and Amazon will use their other business to heavily subsidize their products?

This is why an OS vendor competing with its hardware partners has never worked very well.

Bingo

So yeah, Amazon was first... if you ignore the rest of the market anyway.

I know they both announced at the beginning of the year with paper launch. But is it even out and available for sale anywhere?

Yes, I have a Transformer Infinity sitting on my desk at work. Beautiful device.

Amazon's device has some serious OS limitations, and it doesn't run Jelly Bean underneath either.

Google threw the manufacturers a bone with the Nexus 7, because it does not have a microSD port, nor does it natively support USB drive mounting or HDMI out. You can root it for drive mounting (and it works great with my super small 64 GB USB drive), but there's nothing you can do for HDMI.

My son has indicated he'd prefer an android tablet for Christmas, he's a college student. I'm debating the merits of this, wondering if there will be discounts on textbooks.

AnandTech sez the new entry model Fire is way smoother than either of the HD models.

I spent some time with the Fire, which was almost forgotten in lieu of the newer HD models. It's quite speedy, even considering the lower-end OMAP 4430 powering the device. While both the Fire HD units stuttered occasionally in demos, the Fire did not. It consistently ran smoothly, whether I started playing video, opened a magazine or app, or played in the web browser.

They may be cheaper to buy but consider that it is likely impossible to re-sell them later.

The 8.9" $299 Kindle Fire is a great price and a tempting product, especially given its 1200p screen.

The only issue that I think may hold the Fire HD (8.9") back is that it's 66% heavier than the Nexus 7; the Fire HD is a chunky 567g (1.25 lbs), while the Nexus 7 is 340g (0.75 lbs). That is a big difference in prolonged use.

I want the 3G Paperwhite model. How can I convert the ebooks I've already purchased from B&N so they work properly on a Kindle?

The 8.9" model has not yet been FCC approved.

So can we call it premature specification (albeit intentional)?

Yeah, I just noticed the release date. November 20th? :wtf: That's more than 2 months away! Ridiculous. They should go ahead and announce Fire 3 & 4 while they're at it. Available in 2013 & 2014. Lame.
