Amazon Kindle - anyone?

I have about 100 books on my book shelf I have hardly ever read, mostly because when I'm ready to read a book, I rarely have them with me. The kindle sounds great to me - I can have it with me, and if I want to pick up a book on say, "python programming", I can just buy one and go.

However, I look at a computer screen day in and day out, so I'd really like to know how this "ink" is on the eye sight.

Anyone go from reading regular books to a kindle? Were you glad you did?

My wife has one, and it's really easy on the eyes. I prefer paper books to the digital just because of the feel of holding the book in my hands (and I can take it to the beach and not have to worry too much about it getting stolen) but if your only concern is eyestrain there's not much at all.

My sister has one and the display is very easy on the eyes. I do want to mention though that, if you're not reading much now, a Kindle isn't going to change that. Readers read and writers write. It's an accurate truism.

I can't imagine Kindle would be good for books like "python programming" where you probably want to flip around a lot. I bet they're great for books that you read straight through, like novels.

<--- has never used an ebook reader

The e-ink is great. It's reflective tech like real ink, not projected light in your eyes like a tablet or LCD.

I have the fancy 3G version so I can get a new book from Amazon in under a minute even when there is no wifi connection around.

I also buy SF & fantasy books from baen.com, but for those I need to download to my PC then copy them via the included USB cable. If you read SF, baen also has a pretty good sized library of free ebooks.

I've only used mine for fiction not reference books though.

I got my wife a kindle 3G for Christmas, figuring that one of the kids would latch onto it if she didn't like it. I am surprised how much she likes it, and she is definitely reading more now. Starting to think I should get one; I just wish I could borrow books from the public library in kindel format.

I wouldn't have got one myself, but Santa was nice and sent me one. It works well.

And, yes it is easy to read.

Love my Kindle - I would never be without one now. My brother bought one for me and my fiance for our engagement present - we're most likely going to wind up with one each.

There's absolutely no eye strain - it's more like reading off paper than reading off a screen.

BTW I didn't used to read much, now I read every day. And the list of cheap and free books, particularly classics, is awesome.

The library issue is being worked on and Amazon has made large annoucements about it.

As for the OP, I love my kindle. I just keep it "around" so if I need to stop somewhere I can read. If I get my oil changed, I read. If I have a doctor appt, I read. You get my point. It literally is like reading paper and has 0 eye strain.

I got one as a gift about a month ago and at first thought WTF am I gonna do with this. It turned out that I really like it though. You will definitely read more.

e-ink is awesome.

but technical books on kindle? depends on the book, but I don't see it going well. The screen is too small when there may be a large sample of code you want to look at. I don't even know if they have technical books on kindle actually. It's like textbooks.. great idea, but I just don't see them translating to the kindle well. to a tablet maybe, but even then I have my reservations

I use the kindle app on my vibrant, iphone 4, asus transformer. They all synch so no matter which device I last read from I can pick up where I left off. I used to be one of the "If its not a real book I aint touching it" group until I was reading my old 2001: a space odessy book that is 30+ years old and it fell apart. Plus, many of the books I read over and over are really just rotting away as they are mostly paperback versions and were not really meant to have 20-30 years. So I went kindle app and love it.

LCD sucks for reading. E-Ink is king.

Not sure who you were responding to, but if it was the post above yours then you need to know there's a difference between Nook Color and Nook Touch.

Nook Color: LCD screen
Nook Touch: brand new Nook, e-ink touch screen

Touchscreen > buttons on any ereader. I had an original nook and have used a kindle, and the button UI is quite cumbersome.

Oh. I was thinking of the one running android.
Excuse my comment.

id go for a nook color if youre going to read any stuff regularly thats illustrated/technical. i like mine and got it a couple of weeks ago...i dont love it, but i like it for reading. it does annoy me how cumbersome vendors make using my own bought and paid for books sometimes, so i dont know if ill keep it, but an e-reader would *NOT* do for techie stuff at all, imo
