Amazon Instant Video wants me to use HTML5 in IE....doesn't tell me HOW to do it.

Every time I use Amazon Instant Video, the player's page nags me to use HTML5 instead of Silverlight.

It neglects to say how to coerce Instant Video to actually use HTML5.
I've checked my account settings for anything concerning this.....no dice.

Does it always use Silverlight if it's installed?

You probably need Chrome to view HTML5 video.

Does IE support HTML5 DRM?

To be fair silverlight is dead so might as well remove it now. ;)

For more features and less buffering, we recommend using the HTML5 video player on Google Chrome, Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 8.1 or later, Microsoft Edge, or Opera. dismiss | don't show again
Internet Explorer 11.

Too bad Firefox doesn't do HTML5 streaming. I might have tried watching the Amazon video I accidentally purchased a couple days ago. I ended up cancelling my purchase because a) I don't want to download every time I watch or watch in my browser, and b) I refuse to install Chrome (spyware) or the Silverlight plugin.

Chrome is by far the best browser. Keep using IE and FF lol wouldnt want anyone to know all that secret important information about you.

Hope you dont use a cellphone ever.

Google can spy on me all they want. What exactly will they find out?

lol Spyware. You can disable any Google-based sync features.

And beyond that, if you really want to get rid of the Google in Chrome, get Chromium or any of the browsers based on the platform. You can have your HTML5 cake and eat it too.

Frankly, I am perplexed as to why Firefox has yet to support HTML5 video. That's ludicrous at this time.

Because there is nothing wrong with it as long as you use the tracking protection lists as an ad blocker.

That said, since IE got pseudo abandoned (I know it is present, but it is..... eh), and Edge has no way of ad blocking, I did switch to Chrome (even on my non win10 systems just to have continuity of experience).

OP, the only real way of making sure HTML5 plays is to not have any plugins installed. That means Flash.

I wish websites would just render all there crap in HTML5 and get rid of their own fuckitry of video players that use Flash.

I don't care if it's the best, I want no part of it. Maybe if you get burned a few times, you'll wise up.

Thanks for the tip. :)

I know they're working on it. Last I heard it's still problematic. Anyway, Amazon isn't yet officially compatible with it.

Well, it works fine for me with Firefox64 and Silverlight in Win10, so I have no incentive to complain.

HTML5 seems to work fine for everything else in Firefox.

Maybe I'll give it a try again sometime. (That is, playing video in Firefox while I'm also trying to use Firefox for other things at the same time.)

It's usually been sluggish: Since Mozilla is at least 50 years away from proper mainstream multicore support in Firefox, video playing in one tab would pull a lot of CPU time on one core, leaving much less for the rest of the process to fight for. And, at least with a Flash-based player, there was always the Sword of Damocles hanging in the background: Flash watching and waiting for a really lousy time to crash.

lol does IE even support HTML5? Unless you are forced to for some odd reason I would use a better browser like Firefox, Opera or Chrome.

It's simple. You're so busy looking at your phone that you drive into a gas truck and explode. Duh.
