Amazon gets Electronic Gifting Patent

"Simply giving your mother an e-book for her birthday could constitute patent infringement now that the USPTO's gone and awarded Amazon.com a patent on the 'Electronic Gifting' of items such as music, movies, television programs, games, or books.

The patent may be of concern to Facebook, which just dropped a reported $80 million on social gift-giving app maker Karma Science."

Doesn't the fact that I've been able to give electronic gifts on Steam for well over several years now invalidate Amazon's patent? I thought I learned something along those lines when one of my classes did a segment on patent law.

This belongs in the Patent Hall of Shame along with their 1-Click patent and Apple's design patent on the Star Trek TNG data pad.

No, they switched to a first to file system. It used to be first determined by the government to have invented.

how do you patent the "concept" of giving a gift . . . . . that's like trying to patent the concept of breathing!

It looks like a patent for being able to exchange, reject, or pass on the gift... not on electronic gift giving itself.

That patent was applied for over 4 years ago. Not many details on what it actually is. Calm the fuck down.

allow me to get a $.05 royalty on all physical gifts transacted within the US and Europe. Any gift at all.
