Seriously, knowing how much business they get in a single minute they probably would grill whomever is responsible in IT on the BBQ Grill.

Oh yea. Most likely if this wasn't a hack that took the site down, or if this isn't a quick restart to apply a change/fix, then someone better start running. They will kill whoever tripped over the cord.

I was using it when the site went down...first they lost the information that says your name up by the account button, and how many items are in the cart. Oddly I could add things to the cart even though it wouldn't show the number. Then the whole site died.

So in all, how long was it down? I would like to think they lost millions but really, those who were going to buy from them are still going to so maybe their sales in the next hour will just be twice more than usual. :\

how is it money down the drain? people would just wait til the site is back up to buy something (maybe). 5M = sensationalism and overblown ego. pfft :hmm:

Since their prices really aren't all that great when compared to many of the other e-tailers, I suspect many folks just went to Newegg or some other site to make their purchases.
Yes, many people would just wait, but DAMMIT! I want to order my widget NAO!

Amazon.com's latest earnings report showed that the company makes about $10.8 billion per quarter, or about $118 million per day and $4.9 million per hour.

That's the only reason they posted that. I'm sure it did affect the bottom line but obviously not all $5mil of it. Still hurts.

Heh, I was in a company all hands meeting at Benaroya Hall a few years ago when it went down, sitting in one of the boxes up above the main seating area. I could tell the moment the site went down because from my angle the entire darkened auditorium lit up blue with phone, laptop, and tablet screens in a matter of about 10 seconds.

Bezos was on stage and he called up Brian Valentine, and Brian didn't walk out. Bezos called again and didn't get a response. He said, kind of irritably, "What, is the site down or something?" and the entire auditorium shouted back, "YES!"

LOL
