Any suggestions for a neophyte (love Indian restaurants but don't pay much attention to what I order).

Well, two favorites of mine that they are offering this time are the Chick Pea Curry (Pindi Chana) and the Lentil Curry (Dal Bukhara) because they make flavorful, ready to eat side dishes that enliven any meal.

This time, I also ordered the Chilli Pepper Curry (Mirch Ka Salan) even though the reviews were mixed at best because a review description of it sounded quite enticing to me:

Mirch Ka Salan description: ". . . a mildly spicy, beautifully-colored, creamy-textured sauce for rice or bread made with a base of ground peanuts, sesame seeds, and almonds. The flavor is very complex: the onion, tamarind, and coconut give it a slight sweetness; the garlic, ginger, tamarind, and curry leaves add a bit of tangy bite; and the large chunks of chili peppers lend a very mild heat."

However, if you read a lot of the other reviews, it does sound like a)they might have some quality control issues with this variety and b)even at best the taste might not be for everyone.

I've never ordered any of their pastes so I'd love to hear from some more knowledgeable posters as to which they prefer, and why.

I would rather make my own than order a ready to eat dish. They are way salty, greasy and have a funny flavor.

Coming to paste's.. the only paste I use is to make Biryani(The brand I use is parampara and you can buy it from Amazon).. and I really don't like the idea of a curry paste. IMO, a curry powder is a way better option than a paste.. all the preservatives in those paste's ruin the taste.

Well, this has always been my MO too, but mostly out of never having tried pastes. Still like to hear other's opinions on them.

My opinion is completely biased.. LOL. I grew up in a house where we used to make our own masala's.

Adopt me! 😛

I'd love to find someone to teach me their regional variant of this cuisine one-on-one. It's my idea of gourmet vegetarian food -- simple ingredients enlivened into heavenliness by the creative use of spices.

A top flight Indian restaurant is a thing of beauty!
