Info Amazon Destroys Customer's Ryzen 5 5600X In Soft Pack Mail

Ouch, that sucks. I'm sure they will refund, but that's besides the point when it's something hard to get. Seems like a stupid idea to send something like that in a soft pack.

These days sounds bad for PC building in general, even pre pandemic, it seems nothing is in stock.

Even if it weren't an expensive item, why would the shipper dude think it's ok to put a cardboard product in a soft-pack mailer? That's just asking for a flattening and likely cause the customer to file a complaint & return.

I believe part of the blame is the 100k idiots they hired a few months back and rushed to train (improperly).

OTOH,. I order like 4-5 flash drives from Newegg, I get them in a box. I *heart* Newegg.

Edit: Maybe they have me flagged as a "preferred customer" somehow internally. I spend $1000/mo easily there.

Considering all the items I have gotten from Amazon directly and not a 3rd party reseller come in boxes with zero packing material in them the past 6 months or so I am not surprised.
Same here.

Luckily almost all my Amazon items only travel from their local warehouse to my house using their delivery employees, so it doesn't spend much time in transit.

Newegg on the other hand sends about all smaller components through UPS or Fedex (usually Smart Post) using padded envelopes, so just about everything that arrives is crushed like in post #3. Luckily, only one SSD came damaged so badly it was DOA, but I don't think I'll place any more orders with Newegg when it comes to smaller components. I imagine if I order stuff like a motherboard, they will have no other option besides shipping it an actual box.

Yeah. I bought a paperback book and an airfryer/insta pot from Amazon. Amazon threw both in a large box with zero packaging. Fortunately the book cushioned the other box but the book was beat to hell

Can confirm. Both the 5600x (returned) and 5800x I received were in the bubble envelopes. Beyond me why they're shipping them in this manner. Stupid assholes.

Time to bust out a tweezer and straighten those pins! I've done it before on a Pentium era processor, but I'd imagine that it's going to be wee bit more difficult on a modern CPU with way more pins.

What's important is that my Star Wars Black Series and Transformers get shipped in a box, so thanks for that, Amazon. 🙂

Or how about when you get a box with just one flattened airbag to protect your item. Amazon is the worst company I've seen about packing items. I've often considered making an Amazon packagin shame topic here and post pics.

I wonder if they have an AI that determines the "best" packaging for the specific order, and sometimes the AI messes up. The machine probably spits out whatever box the workers need to use and they have to use it and move on as they get like 5 seconds per package or something crazy like that.

Would make sense if this issue is consistent for a specific product.

There's a certain server rack that if you order one, you end up with 10. Probably similar issue. Lot of people on Reddit have had it happen.

Wow...it seems like every time Amazon sends me ANYTHING, they use a box that's 10-100 times as large as the item being shipped. (although they're often stupidly skimpy with packing inside the box to protect the items.)

Weird. My 5600x came from Amazon in it's standard retail hard packaging. Just as I expected. Are we all 100% these are from Amazon directly and not a reseller?

Sorry, let me clarify -- it came in the standard AMD packaging, but was shipped in an envelope. As others had mentioned, I've received items like a flash drive in an actual box with packing materials to protect it lol. It just seems odd that a ~$300-500 CPU doesn't get at least the same treatment.

That's lame. Mine came in a box. I can't imagine that coming in an envelope.

Actually the ideal tool for this job is one of those disposable-lead pencils with the lead removed. Also a magnifying glass!

They do, they know very specific things about weight & volume of all products they sell. I highly doubt it is up to some random worker to decide what goes into what box.
I read Amazon has a thing against excessive packaging. Cost, weight, processing and waste thing. I read something about how amazon wants to eliminate all non essential costs and has a thing about producing too much waste. Article also mention how the vast majority of stuff can be shipped loose in boxes without damage.

I don't see a problem with the soft pack mailer if the processor is properly encased in its plastic packaging. Processor in the article is probably not in a proper plastic packaging for it.

Am I the only one getting everything in bags from Amazon this month?

Today I received a $100 gold PSU in a bag with no padding. My two Noctua fans arrived in a padded bag. My $50 thin Noctua cpu cooler arrived in a bag with no padding. Bags without padding is usually how things arrived when I ordered from China in the past.

It also looks like they got rid of their packaging feedback. Only way to complain is in chat or by calling.
