Typical CA... they are just going to shoot themselves in the foot, because every internet vendor is just going to take steps to make sure they have no presence of any kind in CA, costing CA even more jobs. It's sad and funny at the same time to see CA and NY continue to dig their own graves deeper and deeper with each such act of stupidity.

But they ALREADY do that. Well, any job where someone would have to physically be in California...

Are there really that many jobs that depend on being an Amazon affiliate? I would guess it's peanuts, but I could be wrong.

I wouldn't particularly like to pay the tax (who would?), but i understand why I'm paying it, so I would go along with it.

legalize and tax prostitution and marijuana. cut out the loopholes that the rich use to not pay their fair share of tax. cut the salaries of politicians. those all seem like much better ways to deal with the current budget crisis. ohh, and get rid of that hugely incompetent asshat, villaraigosa.

I have no issue with this. It's a loophole that frankly should have been closed ages ago. People wonder why tax revenues are down, and a huge part of it is that while 100% of what you bought used to be taxed (or at least 100% of the taxable goods), now a large part of what people are buying are shipped in from out of state, which puts a hurt on every state's budget.

Yes, I like getting "deals" on things that includes avoiding taxes, but I'd completely understand the reasoning for getting rid of that loophole too.
Basically how I feel. It's nice being able to avoid sales tax (although I can't for Amazon, am in one of the few states where they charge it), but this basically is a loophole and I'm surprised it's been allowed as long as it has. And let's be honest, nobody pays use tax (except for Craig apparently :p ).

You might be surprised. Consider that every affiliate purchase is like a tax at about 3%. For California that is surely millions of dollars of income spread across many people (which, by the way, almost all of which will pay income taxes on).

Also (not 100% sure how this worked) - when NY changed their law to force Amazon to collect tax, it was reported that affiliates in NY were being forced to pay the tax if they shipped to someone in NY, but Amazon wouldn't collect the tax. So, in reality, it seems it would be beneficial for those affiliates.

I as well as every living breathing Californian needs to throw out every single politician in this GD state, its ridiculous

While I agree with you about throwing out the politicians, this really isn't the reason for doing so. :p

I'm sorry to say this but one of the reasons I love Amazon is because I don't have to pay sales tax. I already pay enough money to the goverment for so many different things I really could care less if they are losing money.

Move to Oregon if you don't want to pay sales tax.

No sales tax is one of the primary reasons why I shop there. Makes things so much cheaper but I'd still shop on Amazon as they have fast/cheap shipping and even with sales tax things would be a lot cheaper.

Man, I really need to get out of this state. Guess they may be losing some of my business, they still have great prices but adding tax will negate that. Oh well, all good things must come to an end.

Amazon is collecting.

I was referring to before NY forced them to. If you lived in NY and sold a $100 item via Amazon to someone else in NY, Amazon collected the $100. However, on your tax filings, since it would show that you sold it to someone in NY, you ended up footing the bill for the tax.

Right. But California doesn't get all of that affiliate money. They get something like 10% of it or less if you include deductions and such (whatever the tax rate is). The affiliates that make less than $600 probably don't pay squat unless they decide to report it out of the goodness of their heart, because Amazon doesn't file a 1099 if you earn less than that.

Does anyone have the #s on how much affiliate money went to Californians in the past year? I'd be curious to know.

I would guess that being able to tax total sales to Californians is potentially much more lucrative than taxing 10% of whatever the California affiliates are making. And if Amazon pulls out completely, I would guess the affiliates would be mad but the total tax revenues lost would be minuscule.

How much less could you care?

WRONG!!!

If this passes Amazon will not charge sales tax.

They will just cancel contracts will all of their affiliates in CA. This has happened in several states. Sucks for the affiliates but for the rest of us it's not big deal.

Amazon still collects sales tax in NYS. CA just has to go the same route as the NY law and they'll be good.

Kahleeforneeyans are already legally obligated to pay a "use tax" on purchases made from out-of-state, this law will just help ensure that people actually pay those taxes.

I rarely buy anything from companies that don't collect CA sales tax, (newegg, etc.) and honestly, if the 8.375% I pay in sales tax makes an item too fucking expensive, then I probably can't afford it in the first place.

Do I report the purchases I make from places like Amazon? No, but since it's usually less than a couple hundred $$ per year, I'm not beating the state out of too much money in taxes.

Newegg doesn't collect California sales tax on California purchases, despite being based in California?
Wow, California really has not been paying attention, since most internet suppliers do collect tax from the state they are in.

Both Newegg and ZZF charge taxes, that's why I shop at TigerDirect often....

And FFS.... Amazon too now? This is going to suck.
