Online retailing giant Amazon turned its first ever net profit in the last three months of 2001, exceeding its own targets and the most optimistic predictions of analysts.

i think that is great, once on 60 minutes they made the forecast that the CEO of amazon would be worth as much as Gates in like a year or something. they only looked at paper money but not real money i guess, shoulda cashed out after you made you the fake company and your stock goes up to 30 bucks ;)

That honor might have to go to eBay.

But who'd have guessed that Bezos wasn't completely full of it, back when he promised a profit by this quarter.

<< Awesome! Amazon is the best shop on the net. Good for them finally :) >>

I agreee, I've had nothing but good experiences with them. Even on the couple of occasions that there were problems with an order their CS people went above and beyond to ensure my satisfaction. I'm a happy regular shopper :D

Actually that would be Ebay but this could be the second. Now the question is if this profit is sustainable.

Even if eBay didn't exist, Amazon doesn't really qualify for that honor. They are no longer a pure play dot.com. A while back, they smartened up, completely revamped their business plan and formed partnerships with multiple B&Ms. That is the only reason they've finally squeezed out some black ink after about $3 billion in red.

This is, and has always been their greatest strength. Unlike all the other companies stacked end-to-end the graveyard, Amazon was not afraid to change the way they did business whenever it was necessary. They were willing to dump what doesn't work, and try new approaches instead of stubbornly sticking to "dot.comism". Kudos to their management.

The whole Amazon profit thing is kinda misleading. They're not factoring in a bunch of stuff. If they did they're still losing money.

I used to buy DVD's at Amazon but now that catalog titles are now discounted a whole 7-10% off MSRP, after shipping I would be better off going to Suncoast and letting them rape me for full MSRP.

Didn't they really make money? I mean, I know that expert predicted that Amazon wouldn't "really" post profit, but they beat the expectations and posted "real" profit.

At least, that's what I read.

Good news. STill, with 2.2 billion in debt and using bezos's estimate of 30M profit this year, at that rate it would take 73 years to pay off their debt. :Q Still a long way to go. :)

I find myself ordering from Amazon on a irregular basis, but they always deliver on time and have outstanding prices.
