The Guardian is reporting that Amazon hosting services was coerced by the US government to shutdown the wikileaks site that it was hosting on its servers.

Apparently, ol' Joe Lieberman had a press release congratulating Amazon for doing so even before the site went offline. I didn't know that he was psychic!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2010/dec/01/wikileaks-website-cables-servers-amazon

The United States struck its first blow against WikiLeaks after Amazon.com pulled the plug on hosting the whistleblowing website in an apparent reaction to heavy political pressure.

The main website and a sub-site devoted to the diplomatic documents were unavailable from the US and Europe on Wednesday, as Amazon servers refused to acknowledge requests for data.

The plug was pulled as the influential senator and chairman of the homeland security committee, Joe Lieberman, called for a boycott of the site by US companies.

"[Amazon's] decision to cut off WikiLeaks now is the right decision and should set the standard for other companies WikiLeaks is using to distribute its illegally seized material," he said.

Amazon, the purveyors of free speech! They'll leave up a guide for child predators to stalk kids but pull a site that will shine some light on the criminal and two-faced activities by our elected officials.

Maybe the federal government should shut down themselves if that is your criteria. After all, they have violated every Americans' 4th amendment rights for years now by data mining and illegally wire tapping.

I don't think the way the US conducts business should be transparent. It's like playing poker with your hand displayed across your forehead.

Are you going to feel the same way when you learn they are really just trying to protect "a big bank" which is assumed to be BAC from having their illegal deeds put in front of the public in a more blatant way?

Sorta like mobsters protecting their rackets. Funny all of this outrage and action wasn't found when wikileaks put actual US troops at risk isn't it? Now the banksters are in the crosshairs and the politicians are really pissed the fuck off. You can leak whatever you want but when it comes to the banskters, THIS FAR, NO FURTHER!!!

Wow, you're such a fucking moron, it's not even amusing reading this filth of a forum anymore.

Your logic, since some bankers may have done something illegal, therefore an entity like Wikileaks is free to do whatever they want on any situation they want?

Have fun living in your own little fantasy world. Thankfully there are some in power who actually live in reality.

It's just like search and seizure laws that the police must also follow, lest evidence, even incriminating evidence, becomes inadmissible.

Just because one entity does something illegal, which you guys don't even know what the fuck it is specifically, just making wild vague assumptions - the second entity (and all other entities) also have to follow the law too.

Not if it exposes government corruption. And definitely not if the same government breaks the law by spying on its own citizens.

"One cable from February of this year said Mr Gates had "observed that Russian democracy has disappeared and the government was an oligarchy run by the security services."

Others have US diplomats referring to Russia as a "virtual mafia state" and saying that President Dmitry Medvedev plays "Robin" to Mr Putin's "Batman.""

yep, exposing government corruption

And this is a secret to....?

This is a very widely held belief amongst even the common citizens of this and many other countries. How does that in any way compromise security or disclose a state secret?

it makes the US look like a public jackass.

analogy: I think my girlfriend's mom is a bitch but I don't want her to know this next time we see each other.

analogy: you talk shit on various companies, hacker breaks into your email, posts it for the world to see.

They don't need these documents released to do that. They've practically mastered that art form all by themselves.

As for your analogy, most companies know that their suppliers have beefs with them and vice versa. While there is a PR aspect that isn't pleasant, if you are the only game in town, they have to deal with you anyway. There is no company that is naive enough to believe that every other company along their supply chain and their entire customer base loves them.
