Amazon Buys Siri Rival to Compete With Apple

Nice, but I couldn't care less for siri or a siri clone. But as long as it makes apple products NOT unique like they think they are then its all good.
 
I wonder why they'd waste their money on this? According to 99% of Fandroids out there the Google Voice that's built into Android's already just as good as Siri.
 
Meh. I look forward to the day when people collectively realize that none of this speech recognition stuff is as cool as some are pretending it is. It's occasionally useful- while you're driving and need hands free- but that's about it. (And no, it's no longer impressive as a parlor trick- the chick at the bar that you think digs it has already seen 100 other dweebs trying to impress her by asking their phone dumb questions.)

Note to Amazon: Talking to your phone (while in the privacy of your car) is one thing. Talking to your tablet in public will always look completely stupid.

Your statement is based entirely on false premise that this is already a good acquisition and not a waste of money. Nobody will know the result of it for the next few years.
I'm pretty sure Google, Apple, and Microsoft have all made stupid acquisitions in the past that they regret.
Even Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway has made some stupid acquisitions.

Because Amazon isn't installing Android Market, and other Google Apps on their tablets.
Feel free to root your Amazon tablet and install Android Market if you want to install Google's voice program or any of the others though.

But you're right, there's no need for this new Amazon voice program if you're going to root anyway.
 
I don't understand why you'd use voice control for a kindle or even kindle fire. Is pressing next page really that hard?

Because Amazon is going to make a 10" tablet and eventually expand into phones. They're the next "Apple".

Think about it, web based apps will eventually take over and be virtually platform agnostic, the money will be in Amazon's ecosystem selling physical goods, Apple won't make the mad cash it does on apps, so they'll lose a revenue stream, what's left? Amazon physical goods.

Apple got it mostly right, where others have got it mostly wrong. I wonder if I go grab my EVO and tell it to "call dad" will it still Google "call dad" I laughed at how Google hyped up voice dialing as a feature, and I only got it to work about 10% of the time.

Worked alright for me, it was just quicker to tap a few times.

If Google Voice used a sultry female voice, nobody would be complaining. 😉

If I tell my DX "Call Dad" it calls the contact labeled 'Dad' which would just so happen to be my Dad.

But gee, I'm sure glad Siri got this "mostly righter" than Google.

What's even funnier to me, is I had this level of voice command on my old dumb-phones dating back to probably 2006 or so.

Damn if I hated Android phones much as you, I would've switched to iPhone the very next day. I don't get why you tortured yourself for the past year or two using Android operating system you hate? It can't be money since you bragged how you spent $500+ on iOS apps.

Voice calling worked great couple times I tried it. I don't understand why it doesn't work for you when it works for everyone else.

bragged about spending $500 over 3 years? LOL that's not even a dollar a day. Hell that's not even 50 cents a day. OOOOOH! I spent less on apps than most on here spend on coffee. If I said I spent $500 on coffee over 3 years would you say I'm bragging?

And it doesn't work for everyone else, Google and you'll see plenty of people who it doesn't work for. But of course since you've tried it 2-3 times and it worked for you that means = nobody else has problems with it.

First, I don't know why you're linking Google Voice problem. 😕 Who said anything about Google Voice? Google Voice is awesome but that's not what's being discussed.

Second, why are you comparing the money spent for apps with money spent on coffee? What does that have to do with anything? If I'm ok with spending $500 on a single dinner at a restaurant, that doesn't mean I'm fine with spending $500 for apps. I'm willing to bet no one here has spent anywhere near the amount you spent on iOS apps. I don't think I could find enough apps worthy to spend $500 on even if I tried.

I'd say underdeveloped.

There are a lot of scenarios where voice control would be incredibly useful, especially if it were really good. Unfortunately it's not. Even Siri is just scratching the surface.

Natural language processing is one of the holy grails of computing. There are even a few people who think that if you can make a good natural language processor that you could use that to build a good AI.

Hopefully this is the start of something. Amazon, Google, and Apple are three of the hottest tech companies in the world right now. If they're all getting involved in voice recognition, it could lead to some exciting advances in the future.

With Siri, you don't have to have your contacts labeled as "Dad", "Brother", "Sister", etc. So, Siri is better. You can have actual names for those contacts. Siri also knows younger sister, older brother, stepfather, etc.

You're comparing voice commands from 2006 to Siri? This is what I don't get from android fans. Just because a tech has been done before, it doesn't mean its any good. Why don't you use a dumbphone instead of a smartphone, since a dumbphone has been making phone calls for years?

Just like when Apple did copy/paste better than everyone else, Siri is a superior voice command assistant, most don't like to admit it however.
