Amazon begins video game trade-in service

Amazon will print a free shipping label for you to send your games with a trade-in value of $10 or more. Once Amazon receives the game, you get an Amazon Gift Card added to your Amazon account for the value of the trade-in.

Toys R Us has reportedly started a preowned trade-in trial at some stores as well. With these major retailers jumping into the preowned market, Gamestop has to be worried a little.

Way cool, although I think alot of their values are REALLY low. Not that that's any different than Gamestop...

Others, like LBP, seem abnormally high.

Heh...the new 50 Cent game has a trade-in value of only $15 and it was released last week.

I don't see any used games for sale from Amazon, though - so where are these titles going? The advantage Gamestop has is that they can do a same-day turnaround - buy a game back for $10 and resell for $30 all in one day.

The turnaround here seems much longer - including shipping time and whatnot.

But either way, I think think this will only benefit the consumer. Gamestop has had a death grip on this market for too long and charged whatever they wanted. Hopefully this will drive prices down or trade-in values up.

I'd be a little worried if I were a Gamestop shareholder, though.

I was thinking the same thing, that's why I just submitted it and printed out the packing slip before they realize it's not worth that much. $29 in Amazon credit will be much more beneficial to me than what I'd get after Paypal and shipping fees selling it myself. I have it in the FS forum at $35 shipped right now, but I know I'm not going to get that much for it and just haven't changed it.

Seeing as to how it just now started, I can think of a pretty good reason they don't have any used titles to sell yet... 😉

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing...methinks that soon you'll go to Amazon and see this:

Buy it New from Amazon: $30 w/free Super Saver Shipping
Buy it Used from Amazon: $25 w/free Super Saver Shipping
New & Used from other sellers as low as $25

Seriously, I've hated trading games in to Gamestop as they give such crappy trade in credit, this might force 'em to raise the level a good bit. Adding Toys R Us to the list will raise it even more.

$22 for Super Smash Bros. Brawl is pretty good, I might do that.

damn. i need to start my own personal trade in service. ill match amazon and give you cash. lol. i would buy a ton of those games for those prices.

I did some research (looked at CAG), and found this:

CAG Shipwreck has discovered that the games are actually being purchased by a third-party merchant called NorAm International. NorAm seems to mainly deal in media sales (mostly books, DVDs, and CDs) through online storefronts on both Amazon and Half.com.

Looks like Amazon just joined forces with a 3rd party, which makes more sense to me.

I'm not sure if we'll see "Buy used from Amazon", then. I think they're just being resold in various different markets.

It's pretty clear that they think they have a better pricing strategy for used games. And, of course, they probably do, because they have access to massive quantities of used game sales data already (via their own Marketplace sellers) and know exactly what you're looking at as you traverse the site. Combine that with being pickier than GameStop on what they take, and they've got a potential winner on their hands.

The only real problem could be a lack of immediate reward to the trade-ins, but secondspin.com seems to be doing pretty well even without that. I don't think this is necessarily a deathblow to GameStop, but considering GME is down 10% today... well, it seems like the market thinks this is for real.

No kidding. It's odd that people are willing to give their used games away for significantly less value to places like Gamestop, when they could sell them on places like eBay or elsewhere and join the legions of people that demand to receive near full retail for a used game.

Sure, there's a convenience factor here, but if I was in the business of selling my older games I'd try to get as much value out of them as possible to make it worth it.

EDIT: Crazy, apparently LBP is going for as low as $25 New on eBay. I had no idea.

Selling online is risky and time-consuming. You've got to take pictures, make up a listing, wait a while, deal with questions, etc. GameStop? Well, you hand it to them and they give you money, no questions asked beyond asking for ID.

There is value in simplicity and security, or so the market seems to be telling us.

Seems like a good idea for Amazon. I personally hate GS and their rip-off practices and the longass lines. I am too busy so printing a label and shipping to and from work is better for me. Unless I need a game ASAP this sounds perfect.

There are some gems in there. I have a feeling I'm going to send a lot of my older games to Amazon that were too old to sell online and too old that I'll never play them anymore. Plus, I don't mind the Amazon credit because Amazon sells just about anything. Selling them to Gamestop ensures you'll simply buy more games with them...not something I want to do most of the time.

I've already got LittleBigPlanet ($29), NCAA Football 09 ($16), and Mario Kart DS ($16.50) ready to be sent in. I'll easily find something to spend that $61.50.

Gamestop values:
LBP: 26.50
MK DS: 15
NCAA: Not sure

You'll end up something like 5-6 bucks ahead most likely - more if you consider the 10% off discount, though maybe less if you consider ongoing Gamestop promotions (trade in 3 get a bonus or whatever).

Saves you the hassle of dealing with Gamestop employees, though.

I rarely trade in games to Gamestop because I simply do not want another game, and I don't want to hold on to Gamestop credit. I like Amazon because they sell just about anything that I could use the credit on, I'm not limited to just games.

I'm not really sure I get why anyone would do Amazon over a brick and mortar or eBay. It's pretty much the worst of both worlds... You get ripped off like GameStop, but have to wait like eBay.

edit: I didn't realize GameStop only gave out credit. I trade at GameCrazy, and they give you cash.

I hope GS/EB goes outta business. Same price as retail, used games are overpriced, rip you off on trade-in, and their employees don't shit.

That's just unnatural. 🙂

That's awesome, they actually have some pretty good prices for Gamecube games. Considering I don't even HAVE my Gamecube anymore, and the ones they have on there would get me $110...not bad at all!

Ya, Gamestop gives credit for trade-ins. You can actually get cash, but you only get like 60% or 80% (can't remember which) of the in-store credit available. On top of that, you forfeit any trade-in deals if you get cash.

I order from Amazon all the time, so credit at Amazon is like getting credit at Walmart. Their selection of goods is vast, and I'll eventually buy something there anyway, so it's not a big deal whatsoever.

they do have a 10 dollar limit, but it's a 10 overall limit. I sold some older ps3 games to them that were worth only 6 bucks, but my total trade in value was already 130 bucks so they still took them
