Amazon launched the Android Market today and is kicking it off with a free android app every day. The first app today is Angry Birds Rio. It looks as though the Amazon market is US only for right now, but I am sure Amazon will be changing that. I love that finally there is some open competition between markets now! Let the best app market win.

I am very Amazon biased BTW, I love Amazon and use it for most things. I guess I am a Amazon fanboy if there is such a thing.

Very cool. Hopefully they will bring some semblance of quality control to their app store.

One of my biggest criticisms of Android has been its terrible app store. It's completely overloaded with garbage. Go to the "new" section, and it's nothing but trash designed to show you as many ads as possible before you delete it in disgust. You'll see most of the apps submitted by the same few people, who bafflingly haven't had their accounts revoked. Most of their descriptions aren't even written in clear English.

If Amazon do this right, it's definitely a step in the right direction for Android.

The Amazon market should be much higher quality due to the $99 a year subscription fee developers have to pay to use it. The spammers and scammers probably wont be willing to pay that.

I have released a couple of apps on the google market myself. But I don't really make enough money from them to bother paying the $99 fee.

I never bothered to look at Android's new app releases, because trying to find a "diamond in the rough" was like trying to find a dollar bill in a 10 foot pile of horse shit. It wasn't worth it. It was much easier just to stick to the popular apps.

However, in an app store that has some semblance of quality control, I would feel more inclined to take a chance and explore the lesser-known apps. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I am getting the feeling it will be much easier to find the good apps with the Amazon appstore. It feels a lot more like... app brain but with purchases added etc....

The other upside I see is it looks like all purchases will be USD through Amazon. Unlike google app market where I get charged international transaction fees by Chase...bastards. I could be wrong, but it seems like this is the case.

I have tried downloading an app just to test out the store and it's not working for me. Says I need to have a payment set-up on one click. I have on click turned on with a payment method, still nothing.

i downloaded the angry birds app just fine, worked just like that had it shown on the site, installed the store APK, app downloaded automatically after that

This should help Android overall. Wouldn't be surprised if the Android Market becomes focused on smaller scoped apps(indie developers, root, general tinkering) while the Amazon App Store starts getting premium content due to the improved spam control/filtering and the yearly fee.

I think the Appstore is a great idea to keep malicious apps off the android marketplace.

Also if you all can help a fellow ATer out, by downloading and rating up my app on the amazon Appstore I would be super happy. The link is in my sig.

Check the Android Police weekly roundup. Very useful.

Actually, all their content is pretty nice, though the site design isn't very slick. (Which is why I read it with Pulse through my phone.)

Works great for me on T-Mobile. DL of the Angry Birds app was a little slow but the overall process worked as expected.
This sucks for (most) ATT users who won't be able to install it yet.

Edit: just noticed the app automatically installed to my SD card, also.

Finally got it by "buying" it through the website and then installing it through the apps store. Why it needs to check for payment methods for a free app is beyond me.

Well most people know ATT sucks when it comes to letting you actually do stuff with you know...your own phone! At least Amazon is willing to put up with ATT's BS and work with them to get it up and running.

I am truly impressed with how much is already on the Amazon store... it feels like they were able to get most of the good apps out there already.

It is ad free from what I could tell from the few minutes I spent playing it(It better be ad free since it's going to cost money after today).

I'm a bit torn about the Amazon App store. The primary thing I am not gonna be a fan of is having to open up two different markets to update all of my apps. I do like the UI and selection of apps at the moment though.

Got it loaded and installed Rio. I like the idea. Also cool they are advertising that every day a new paid app will be free. Good stuff.
