Wow, I have never heard of EVE Online until now, this game sounds very interesting and it seems everyone is giving it a thumbs up! I might have to give this one a shot.

Thing is about Eve...and I am just learning this...Eve is one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had on a pc. That's saying a lot for a 35 year old gamer. What gets people when it comes to Eve is the learning curve. It is absolutely unforgiving.
However if you make it through a couple dozen hours of play(and I mean that literally) you will begin to comprehend the depths of it all. I just discovered Eve news. What makes it so interesting is that the world of Eve is SO real that the news is REAL NEWS!

Other interesting things about the game.
Not nearly as many people are screaming for a sequel because the game as it is is so amazing already.
Secondly all the expansions are free!
Game has a real world economy.
The future of the game is so complete within itself it's almost as if the players themselves truly decide where the game goes.
It's all just extremely difficult for a newbi to put into words.
An experience that should not be missed by anyone who calls themselves a gamer.
World of Warcraft is for children.

You can shoot rocks in this game with FREAKING LASER BEAMS!

On a serious note. I'm a wuss in game so far and have no combat experience aside from getting owned at a gate camp and missions (and missions hardly count as battle experience, f1-f7 and wait for things to die)

Most of the time in missions i don't even orbit. In my drake i just waltz in and f1-f7.

then in my raven i waltz in and f1-f6 and then use my shield booster after a while.

Don't know what f7 is yet. I've been hanging about the asteroid belts looking for baddies. When the battle is on I orbit one asteroid after another at close range doing figure eights instead of orbiting the enemy. Using rockets of course. Seems to be very effective. I've found that just destroying and robbing npc's can be very profitable in the beginning. I have yet to attack another person but I did swoop in on some guys discussing who was going to get the loot from a destroyed ship and bolted before they knew what was happening.
To my surprise a little tag I found was worth 350,000 isk on the market.
Think I'm going to spend some time focusing on a cloaking ship with some warp core stabilizers and practice swooping in other other peoples kills. I've been told it's dangerous but I think I can make a good job of it.
I just love how everything is permitted in this game and how many people are dedicated to the rpg.

I haven't tried PvP either. How much different is it from ratting (PvE)?

Sure I can get webbed or jammed but I get that in missions too. I just dread the nosfertu's sucking my cap down...

really the only difference between pvp and pve is that when a player is trying to kill you, he usually has friends and might have one person specifically designated to web/scram you so you cannot leave and will almost certainly die unless you majorly out gun them (which is entirely possible if you have drones and they don't).

electronic warfare is very important and is the one thing i have not put focus on. I have decent drone skills and decent weapons skills.

once i get some e-war skills i will be set to try some pvp...i'm thinking about trying to jam some people

cmon guys, killing people isn't hard. Go grab a frigate, go into a low-sec belt, and try to find somebody. When you do just aggress them. You'll need a disruptor and web depending on range. Either way it's easy.

Two totally different games. You have the formula for pve up front. You know if you don't have a fitting for the mission you shouldn't even try it, and can infact just turn it down.

In PVP you will find that you cannot account for every scenario and this is when Risk vs Reward aka Oportunity Cost comes into play. It is also where you will want to extend yourself out to other players since anything one person can do 10 people can do faster and safer ( although anything 10 people can do 100 can do faster and safer - and so on and so forth ).

Faction warfare is a PVP system that favors new-to-pvp players in the cost of competing as well as smaller corporations who cannot effectively impact the totalhelldeath 0.0 territory control game.

In a word to describe PVP against PVE: Faster.

PVP is far more thrilling and damned addictive. 5 years this August man. I've done a lot in EVE and if it was another MMO I'd be able to say I've done it all. I am still just scratching the surface with EVE and PVP is the gateway.

note: I've been an avid PVPer for 3 years. The first kill was like crackrock.

Your entire post FTW! If people only knew....if people only knew. I wish I could make everyone try Eve once.
One thing I now have respect for is the killer learning curve.
It's a superior idiot/jackass filter.
Eve definitely is like rock. I've only been playing a week and I've already got a plan and about 1,000,000isk saved up.
As soon as I have the proper skillz trained for my new ship it's pvp hunting time. Can't wait!

I quit Eve about a year ago but damned if it isn't drawing me to come back. I played for 3 years and had 42mill skillpoints. But I sold my char to a corp-mate so I would have to start from scratch. One thing though is that some of the most fun I had playing Eve was in the beginning where I was learning new things everyday and seeing new ships like my first BS was so exciting and awe inspiring. Starting over wouldn't be too bad, and that is saying something.

Bah I must resist.

Not exactly sure yet. I think a million isk is not quite enough for the offensive ship I want so my plan at this point is to buy a badger which holds 4000+ and start mining with it for awhile.
This ship fits my play style as I frequently mine and let the game run in the background while I'm doing other things. This will work out to appx 300,000+isk per load.
At this rate(and while taking on and looting npc's) the isk will stack up fairly quickly.
What I'm looking for is a stealthy ship that I can use to loot battlefields and get away quickly. I'm told this is very dangerous as people will use equipment to destabilize your warp core but I'm hoping that there are plenty of other counter-measures to compliment warp core stabilizers.
Hopefully cloaking will play a part.
I don't know...I'm still a neophyte and I don't really know what is and is not possible but this is the picture I have in my head at this point.
I've also talked a friend into being an accomplice so we're both still learning & discussing strategy.

I have an alt that I have been boosting standings with (was a mining/hauling alt, so no standings). This weekend I will be joining the Gallente militia.

My main is in a corporation and an alliance and I PvP with him a lot. Usually in low sec Genesis.

After seeing this thread I visited some others forums and the word seemed to be that if your are starting out be prepared to grind for 6 months before enjoying pvp and invest 2 years before 'owning' anyone. Seems a bit extreme, is this really the case?
