Hmmm, in parts of the world cows are considered gods....

The North American Indians thought of the buffalo's as gods as well. How could someone kill such a wonderful creature? Almost killed all of them too. Must be the American way...Greed and profit....

I'm not into killing animals not even cows or chickens. I think it should be done safely and painless. I also think whales have it way better then chickens and cows do, at least they are not pinned up they are free range. I don't really care to think about american farm animals it's all for the buck. I'd feel a lot betting eating meat from an animal that lived somewhat of a happy life.

Also, I believe humans are no different then animals so when do they start being put on the menu? I might start eating meat again!

Btw, i didn't say anything about moral only that we didn't have a tradition. You didn't say you eat cow, but you haven't said you don't either so i assume that you do. Cows are sacred in some countries, that does not mean that you care. Whales might be sacred in other countries, that does not mean that we care.

I applaud your view ericlp! Cows are not treated that bad I believe, if you don?t count the use of growth hormones to make them look like cow Schwarzenegger?s in America (forbidden in my country). Chickens, that?s another case altogether. They grow up in tiny cages with several floors of chickens above each other so the ones at the bottom literally eat the ****** of those above, all to save a few bucks in food, and give McDonalds even lower prices. Whales live a free and healthy life until they are harvested, I will eat whale meat any day over chicken, that?s for sure.

you do know that alot of other nations like the US hunt whales also in great numbers
and you do know that there are alot of species of whale out there and not nearly all of them are endangered

My first post was about empathy which you lack. Of course you do not care. You are eating a creature with an enormous brain that communicates and sings and is likely very self aware. That's pretty disgusting, but you already feel that way so you will do anything not to see it.

Well, I don't agree. I certainly feel empathy for animals that suffer, but I don't agree that whales are in any special position in the food chain just because they have bigger brains than most animals. As I have tried to get an answer on in another thread, where should you then put the limit on how big the brain should be before it can be eaten? Humans are in a special position because it?s our own species, and there is near universal agreement that we have human rights. So arguments about this are imho just stupid.

Where do you put the limit, is it just humans and Whales, or do other creatures in nature also inhibit properties that make them morally unsuitable for human consumption?

Everything is stupid where there is no empathy. You have none for whales and you are motivated by your love of tradition not to have any. It is normal, sadly, that people take after those who surround them, safety in numbers and group identity from merciless criticism and teasing as a child, etc etc etc... Cannibals didn't give up cannibalism without a struggle and your people won't stop eating whales without international law and general condemnation of the same kind.

I have given up eating monkeys and chimps too, by the way.

You will just have to settle for the fact that future generations of Norwegians will grow up with a more fully expanded set of morals, and your tradition, like the tradition of cannibalism, will disappear as humanity expands its notion of human to sentient rights.

You would not like to be eaten so don't eat what may have the same conscious thought.

Hmm, I believe the latest science indicates that our human ancestors ate up the Neanderthals too. There is a tiny cannibal stashed away in our brains and every now and then it pops out as you can see in the news.

Most while species should not be hunted, and not because some people think they are smart (i think they are as dumb as a sack of bricks) or cute. They reproduce extremely slowly and all it takes is for some politician to let the whalers take a excessive amount to get a few extra votes.

Here is a example. The Canadian east cost cod fishery (and more recently other less known species) was destroyed because the politicians didn't want to cut back the quota (how much fish can be harvested each year), leading to the collapse of the stocks and the sudden closer of the fishery that was required to save the species form extinction. To make matters worse... as soon as there is any sigh of recovery the fishermen demand the fishery be reopen in some shape or forum.. and it is thus preventing any recovery. The science was there the entire time telling the politicians just what was going on, but they chose not to listen and the government employees who conduct the research are bound by law to not disclose such information to the public.
The point i'm trying to make is that whatever number they come up with to justify the hunting of whales could very easily be simply made up, even if there is real science being done. Fish can recover from this given time, or just survive, whales won't.

The only product i know of that would justify this hunt would be the oil from certain types of whales that is actually better then any artificial lubricant on the market, as for food, there is enough non endangered/threatened species to eat out there.



Going off topic onto the seal hunt, you animal rights activist REALLY got your pryorities screwed up. Decades ago yes, seals where killed in inhumane ways sometimes, whatever was faster or cheaper, and a few guys had a sick sense of humor. Once upon a time this anti sealing campaign did have a realistic goal, a humane seal hunt. That has happened, no one who is right in the head likes the idea of a seal being skinned alive and so with the pressure and publicity no one dares to do such a thing anymore. You even managed to put a stop to the killing of white coats (juvenile seals who's fur is white, blends in with ice), even though there is no reason for this beyond they are cute to some people. The videos that these activist show around screeming bloodly murder are old videos, and some if not most of the more gruesome ones the activists ASKED someone to do what was shown. The population is at a healthy leavel, the quota has even been cut back this year due to increased juvenile mortality with poor ice condition (they breed on pack ice in the ocean) despite the uproar from the sealers as any such group(fisherman, lumberman, ect) will do when they will make less money.

Even though few here would believe me on this, i think this is partly a scam. With all these donations, all the volunteer work, some people are getting some pretty fat pockets, and if this issue went away those pockets would be a lot smaller. They prey on the stupid saying these poor poor cute creatures are endangered and skinned alive just for a few body parts and ask for a donation.

Come on, there is a commercial whale hunt based probably on bad (if any) science and you are worried a few cute oversize watter rats are being killed.
