amature database designer

Hi, this is my first post. I'm a comp sci student taking a class on fundamentals of database theory and design. We've spent a lot of time talking about theory and design, but very little time actually working with SQL. My prof has given us an assignment to create a script (pretty sure that was his word) file which can be run in sql to automatically create the tables in the database from a xls file. Then we're supposed to run a series of queries on it and capture the output. The queries are no problem, but the initial file which creates the database is driving me nuts. My prof hasn't gone over it with the class, and the textbook is silent as well. Does anyone know of a resource for this kind of thing? I'm not looking for anyone to do my homework, but I could really use a push in the right direction.
