I think not upgrading a complete comp each time you do so is the wise choice. And which ever way that allows you to do that keeps you better off. I attempt to alternate between board/chip/memory and gpu/psu as best I can. Going back a ways, my upgrade path has been.

I just got the X4 last weekend.
That has worked out very well for me in progressive upgrades. If I had to change everything all at once, such as not having the Asrock Dual board, it would have been a much harder decision. Now I've started keeping an eye on cards to replace an 8800gt, but I won't actually do it until January at the earliest.
Given pretty much every game review I've seen I don't see the point in the intel expense and even the X6. I am also purposely not going to overlclock my X4 since the difference I just gained was huge. Leaves me some room to grow later. A little tricking myself I guess.
