AM2 Socket 940 & DDR2

I was wondering if there are any people holding off on a new build until AM2 is released?

The reason I ask is with AMD introducing Socket 940 for DDR2, and although presently it does not seem that this new move will be providing major significant improvements over the 939, but looking towards the future, when do you think that socket 939 will become obsolete?

I guess what I am getting at, is there are some significant changes coming to the PC world with DX10, Vista, DD2 & DD3, where does that leave the guy who just spent some nice change on a new system?

AMD has alraeady stopped producing faster CPU's for S939, but the current chip are still plenty fast.

Until AMD swithches to 65nm cores, I see no reason to go AM2.

^^^ Amen

What AM2 brings to the table is slightly less power consumption through the use of lower voltage DDR2, and the eventual migration to 64bit operating systems. DDR2 has the ability to take us to 4-8GB of ram, where as DDR1 is really maxed out at 4GB tops.

.65nm will be when AM2 looks attractive, but the biggest benefit I see AM2 bringing is a platform that can utilize 64bit tech for the mainstream. When you only have 1GB of ram, 32bit or 64bit doesnt make a difference. When you have 4GB of ram, 64bit is your only choice. 😀
