Can you all stop saying Conroe is everything?

You forget one thing: Conroe is not here!

Theoretically Conroe is NOTHING compared to the cpus of the future but guess what: THey arent here either!

By the time Intel releases Conroe there will be more announcements for Intel itself as well as AMD on CPUs we have NEVER even heard of before, that will trounce Conroe all together.

Conroe looks great now, but by the time it comes out it will be overshadowed by the announcement of upcoming cpus.

The new intel core architecture is much more better than the current amd processors. so i say you ll wait and buy a intel platform with the conroe processor

Should i just stick with my 2gb DDR and Abit KN8 mobo and upgrade my CPU with the 800$ i was planning on spending on AM2 and then keep that stuff until AM3? or should i jump on board the AM2 bandwagon and upgrade my MOBO, CPU and RAM to AM2 specs?

Keep in mind im a gamer and an AMD die hard so dont bother spaming this thread with useless intel jargen.

Ideas?

Since you got 800 bucks for upgrade, you should buy Asrock motherboard that are updateable to AM2 socket so you wouldn't have to worry if you have to replace motherboard and everything so for now so again, you can just buy Asrock motherboard, x1900xt or 7900gt, and AMD X2 3800+ dual core that you might need to take advantage of dual core technology if you plan to use Windows Vista on 2007 so therefore, this upgrade should cost almost 800 bucks.. just a suggestion. :)

My suggestion, for what little it may be worth, is the following:

  • Wait for AM3, since AM2 is only a minor performance increase similar to a RAM upgrade and not worth the extra cost when the OP already has a socket 939 system.
  • Upgrade PSU - OP mentioned this is planned.
  • Upgrade graphics card - OP mentioned this is planned.
  • Overclock the 3000+ currently owned. This is still an excellent CPU. OP's sig mentions the 3000+ is overclocked to 1.98GHz. Even if it is a Winchester, instead of a Venice, it will probably go up to 2.4GHz with most Venice's capable of 2.7GHz. Use what is already in possession to its full capacity before purchasing more.
  • If an overclocked 3000+ is not enough, then go for a single core AMD 3800+ San Diego for just under $200. The 11x multiplier will allow an overclock that should satisfy most current needs. A dual core is nice to have if the OP does not have a budget but what does dual core really provide? Few games and few applications are currently multi-threaded so I do not yet see a need for a dual core cpu. That $200 3800+ seems to me to be a perfect, budget-minded solution. It seems the OP will probably upgrade when AM3 is on the market and a dual core processor may not be needed until then.
