For those that don?t want to read. Here?s my question, "Will AMD release the k8l for the AM2 socket? Or only the AM3?

------------for the rest of us------------
Any who, my daughter?s computer totally died (psu blew-up..enermax... theres a first), board, chip, ram, even the hard-drive! Which means i get an upgrade :D

I am having a hard time deciding. After some research, I sill would like some incite. AM2 gives me an upgrade path. But no current performance difference. Maybe some in the future, but none now. s939 has no upgrade path. But is cheap. all of that has been discussed.

The only real benefit for am2 is if AMD makes the k8l for it. But from what I have read it appears only to be coming out for the am3 platform. I really hope they stop switching sockets so fast here. Its very annoying.

So, if I go am2 I will be going with a min of PC6400 (ddr2 800). I also must buy with in the next two weeks tops. You try dealing with 17 year old and no net.....omg....I might die :(

thoughts?

now that we are so close you have to be stupid to buy 939. no matter how you see it AM2 will make your upgrading possibilities much bigger in the future, without having to spend a fortune. and no, K8L is coming to am2, am3 will probably be used on k10 + ddr3.

I've been looking into this a bit also, and from what I've been able to gather, k8L will come to AM2, but quad core might not.

Don't quote me on that, I'd read through some roadmap thingies.

The info is not solid nor official...

but im under the impression that AM2 will support DDR2 and AM3 will support DDR3, and that both will support K8l chips, and the the AM3 will not be arriving for sometime as DDR3 is semi-pointless considering how pointless DDR2 has been over DDR.

While Conroe might be the way to go, its possible AMDs chips towards the end of '07 will match up with Conroe. Perhaps AM2 is not such a bad idea to upgrade to afterall.

The bad part is AMD's answer to Conroe on the AM2, while a strong answer, may be coming at a time when Intel is already ready to release chips even better than Conroe. We shall see....

But I think AM2 is a fine path to take for the future, according to the latest AMD roadmaps and articles.
