AM radio is basically end-of-the-world apocalyptic fanatics or ultra-right paranoid conspiracy loons engaging in stream-of-conscious diatribes with themselves in their grandmother's garage, nestled next to her 1956 mercury montclair and her defunct fat shaker belt.

so, yeah...I can see the appeal.

+1

You're talking to someone who has at least $3000 in radio equipment.

It's a hobby I guess, have that much in the drum kit over time, but used to make money with that.

Love the sound of AM especially during the summer when sferics are active.

Go big or go home!

Three letters is all you need to remember: WLW

If you have time to kill, check out this video. It's fascinating if you're in the field or just like electrical stuff! :p

Think I read on that station once, insane amount of power coming out of there.

And people are scared of their tiny little 5 watt cell phones giving them cancer. :p (if they even operate at that)

On similar train of thought this is pretty cool too: (long but worth watching if you have the time)

It sorta reminds me of the building I work in, same idea, just very different type of equipment. My building is a bit more on the electronic side than analog though. Some cell sites do have lot of analog stuff like attenuator cans and stuff. Pretty interesting when you consider the physics and engineering that must go into those things. Like, the actual length or bend radius etc all matters.

A vacuum tube tesla coil that size would be awesome.

The amount of engineering and dedication was incredible.
Think about it, this was decades before any space program.
There were no CAM/CAD.
A bunch of nerds with slide rules! :awe:
Engineering FTW.

And the transmission line, a ten inch pipe, nothing defines "hard line" like that!

Conjugate load matching is a good corona preventer in the realm of a decade of spare megawatts. ;)
Need big balls and distance and you're golden. Incomings at 6km/s are turned to vapor ten meters out.

How mamy hectares of solar panels does it take to power that?
