This year has been alright for me so far, but we're still only in March.
º Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster. I never played the original release, so the HD Remaster gave me that chance. I was in fact surprised, pretty good game.
º Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. Another game I didn't play at the time of its release, up until the PC / Steam version got out. I took a "chance", and so far it's pretty fun.
º Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak. A nice surprise, it's also not only a good RTS but a prequel to Homeworld, what's not to like? So few people talk about this game, it deserves more attention.
º Rise of the Tomb Raider. It's a great game, really. I think it's even better than the first one (well, by "first" I mean the 2013 reboot).
º XCOM 2. It's superb. No, not perfect, but simply a really good game. It's much better than Enemy Unknown (which was pretty good already). Honestly, if you like XCOM, or simply like turned-based tactical games, then XCOM 2 is an excellent choice.
º Dying Light: The Following. (the expansion / DLC, specifically). Disclaimer for this one: I do not own it, but I've played a few hours of it here and there at my cousin's place (he owns it), I had fun for the time I played it. Admitedtly if I do buy it eventually I'll definitely look for a bargain. It's a pretty solid game really (I've just had my fill of zombies, I can take a break from that for a while, but the game is good nonetheless; credits where due).
º Street Fighter V. Yes I know, and I agree, it was a terrible launch for all platforms. And the content was (well, still is) very bare bones. However, the core fighting, the mechanics of it, the way the game was rendered, the fluidity of the fights, it's all there and then some. I do not own the game myself and I've never really been a "fan" of the Street Fighter franchise (I'm more of a Mortal Kombat guy), but I do appreciate me some 'good ol'' SF action as I used to play it more often back in the days with my cousin at the arcades. What I do know for sure is that from the amount of time I played it (PS4 version) I definitely felt like I was playing a classic SF game only this time it just happened to be one of the best looking fighting game I have ever seen. I do have respect for the SF franchise, and it was frustrating to see that it was released in a clearly uncompleted state. But really, I do plan to buy it for PC later this year, at which point there's surely going to have a bit more meat around its bones.
º BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Extend. It was on console yeah, but that's the PC version I'm referring to, on Steam (not sure if it's available on other digital distribution platforms, or if there's a retail version). Just like SF, I play most of the fighting games I know of at my cousin's place, since he's a big fan of... well almost every fighting games in existence. I wouldn't have known about that one had it not been for the fact that he sent me an e-mail pointing at its release on Steam. I was indeed surprised by its rather silent release, no one speaks about it, but it is one heck of a pretty damn solid fighting game. I'm getting crushed online, but the game plays so well for me that I definitely don't regret buying it.
That's so far. As for what I'm waiting for...
º Killer Instinct: Season 3. It's Mother Freakin' Killer Instinct, on PC, with cross-platform play online. I don't care one bit about its Windows 10 prerequisite, since I was planning to make the move anyway (just later on, had it not been for KI). And yeah, it's Killer Instinct. The new one (which I've played a lot of with my cousin) is THE best overall fighting game right now on the market for me. It's really that simple. I want it, I need it, most likely a day one purchase, if not within the month (April).
º Dark Souls III. I never played the first, nor the second. However, I've watched a lot of streams of the second one. It got me very interested and I'm definitely going to buy the third one. Not sure if it's a day one purchase, but it's pretty high on my priority list for upcoming games.
º Star Fox Zero. Well ok, it's not on PC. Whatever. It's a game I'm looking for this year, can't wait. I haven't played a [good] Star Fox game since... well, since SF64.
º DOOM. No, I don't think that the new one looks "bad". In fact, the more I see of it, the more I want it. And I honestly don't care much about its multiplayer, good if it ends up fun, but I don't care either way. All I want is a kickass campaign, and OH MY GOD, yes, let me create my own DOOM levels. I honestly can't wait to play it. Most likely a day one purchase for me. It's DOOM for crying out loud (yeah I said the same thing prior to DOOM 3's release, and I ended up disliking it, except towards the end when it finally picks itself up a bit, but that new reboot that's coming in May looks fantastic and much closer to the original).
º Overwatch. I'm very curious about that one. I will probably end up buying it, but I know it won't be a day one purchase (nor even a month one purchase). I just know that I'll be interested enough to buy it eventually. Or I suppose I might just say that it doesn't look bad at all. The only thing I'm worried about is its seemingly over-reliance on team play (not only to win, but to have fun, too). I'll see in due time.
º Total War: Warhammer. Ok, first of all, why couldn't they just have taken the golden opportunity to simply call it Total Warhammer. Anyway, it's Total War, mixed with the Warhammer universe. It's something that - without exaggeration - I've been thinking about ever since I first played Rome: Total War so many years ago. Now I DO have a problem with that one. It's made by Creative Assembly. I know, they're the only ones making Total War games. That's my problem. I suppose I can give them the benefice of the doubt for that one, again. I did exactly just that for Rome 2. Please CA, don't fuck that one up, it's Warhammer. I don't care if you want to rape another setting in the ass with a rushed game, just DON'T fuck up Warhammer.
º No Man's Sky. I'm having anxiety when I think about that game. It's two things for me. It's: 1) The most awaited game of 2016, period. It's also: 2) The one game that has all the potential in the world - nay - the universe, to be the greatest disappointment since... possibly since Mass Effect 3. I have to be careful when I'm hyped about games that promise so much, but might end up delivering not only a 10th of it, but what's in it sucks really hard. I DO have genuine confidence and trust in the small devs team that is Hello Games to deliver, because so far the previews I've seen look promising (to me they do), and it looks like they've so far managed to actually include everything they did mention about the game. I WANT that game to succeed, I WISH them the very best of luck (to the devs); if that one works, they're guaranteed to stay in the business for a long time. But it could also just be a complete disaster. Please, No Man's Sky, be the game I'm imagining you to be!
º Mighty No. 9. I love the Mega Man franchise. And hmmm, yeah. There's not that much else to add about MNo.9 beyond the fact that it is a good-looking, seemingly really fun Mega Man-style game made by none other than the legend himself, Mr. Keiji Inafune. When I saw the kickstarer for it I knew it'd work. I just knew it. It's freakin' Mega Man in a new coat, sign me in. I still enjoy 2D platformers to this day, especially those in the veins of Mega Man.
And I think that's about it for now. I might be forgetting a few, but the main ones I'm looking forward to are the ones mentioned above. I think that 2016 will be a solid year for gaming. Probably not as good as 2015 has been, that one was just... wow.
