Am I weird for wanting a 'candy bar' phone?

My cell phone contract is coming up for renewal (Verizon) and I'm really eyeing the Nokia 6236i phone for a couple reasons. First, I've never owned a non-flip-phone. I went from a Motorola Star-Tac to an LG TM-510 to a Samsung SCH-A670 (which I currently own). I like the RAZR, but it's a flip phone, which is a form factor of which I've grown tired.

I never use the camera features on my phones, so the 640x480 resolution of the Nokia's camera isn't a problem. And there are only two features which I consider nice to have: Bluetooth, and a speakerphone for in-vehicle use (I drive stick, which is hard to do when you've got a phone to hold).

The Nokia doesn't have Bluetooth, but it has a speakerphone. Plus, Nokia's interface is pretty straightforward and their physical quality control is excellent. Additionally, the 6236i is -$100 (that's right, negative $100) after rebate when purchased from Amazon with a new plan (I'm getting off a family plan and starting a contract of my own, so there's no problems there).

Thoughts? It's a simple, cheap phone, but I think it'd be a good choice for me.

Candy-bar style phones are my favorite, personally. I've been carrying a SE T610 for quite some time and I like it a lot. I agree the RAZR is stylish, and I'd definitely consider buying one if it weren't for the clunky-ass, slow interface that the newer Motorola phones have. I'm just not used to it.

To answer your question: You're not weird for wanting a candy-bar phone. Unless I'm weird for liking mine. In which case, we're weirdos.

Sony Ericsson W810i FTW. But since you don't need a 2MP cam, 4GB walkman mp3 player, FM radio, or quad band with edge, the Nokia will suit you fine.

I've been using candy bars (SE T637 before my W810) for the past year or two ever since my Moto T720 broke in half...

Non flip phones suck. I hate having to lock the keys just to prevent accidental dialing when I put it in my pocket.

Which is why most today's candy bar phones have an auto lock feature. RTFM FTW!

Haven't use a non-flip phone since 2003, so I wouldn't know. Got too annoyed with them. I'm content with flip phones now.

w800i FTL here 🙁

I dont really like flip phones as well. and I have had nothing but trouble with motorola phones. Nokia candy bar phones for me. I have a Nokia 6620. The Nokia S60 platform is nice if you want a smartphone.

My SE phone I had in 2002 had autolock🙂

Personally I would want bluetooth more than speakerphone, I think headsets work better and sound clearer.

I love my Cingular 2125. I would not mind having a flip phone I don't really care but for some reason only had non Flip phone unless a Sidekick Color counts then I had a black Berry and now my cingular.

I hate hate hate flip phones. Currently rockin the TMobile SDA, which is awesome, but I've owned 3 or 4 Nokias in the past, all great phones. Nokia phones get GREAT reception.

Why do people hate flip phones? 😕

For me at least because they are thicker, the hinge can become loose, harder to text since it is thinner than candy-bar type phones once you open it.

No, I too prefer the candy bar style. I'm still waiting for an acceptable inexpensive T610 replacement for Tmobile in the US. Hopefully the flip fad ends soon or equalizes.
