Am I too old for a Civic Si?

MR2. If you find one that hasn't been abused (or just lightly abused), it's as reliable as a Corolla.

Small though, only 2 small seats... Nissan silvia/200sx? That's got more room and a very nice engine.

If he's throwing down $20k, he could easily get a mk2 MR2 in great shape and a practical car for the kids.

I've actually checked out both cars in person and the Civic just looks more cramped, not to mention the interior looking cheap in a tacky sort of way. He also has the problem of the SI being manual only, i don't think that's going to go over well with the wife.

I believe he wants a manual. I don't think the civic interior feels cheap. Infact it looks and feels very nice.

I agree, I have a small child but still want to get a fun car. I decided on a 2002 Maxima with 255 horsepower, still has 4 doors. You could get a 2003 maybe 2004 for 20K, should make you and the wife happy

My brother had one and it was indeed a fun car to drive; however it is totally not worth it. I would say go for a Mazda 6, or even a used Accord. After my brothers Si was stolen and found at a chop shop, he took the insurance money and bought a used Accord V6 coupe that was a hell of a lot better than the Si and it was cheaper.

Fun cars, but overrated and I do think at your age you may want to look for a slightly more "sophisticated" (a very relative term) car.

I forgot all about Maximas. They are FAST and practical.

Lots of good suggestions in this thread. I myself am a car nut that had to buy a less-than-thrilling car ('05 Hyundai Accent) for various reasons. However, it does get great gas mileage, which is a major bonus.

I wouldn't mind owning one of the new Si's at all, although a Subaru WRX would probably be my first choice. Nor would I mind the new camry (the redesign looks quite nice), a GTI, a Pontiac Solstic/Saturn Sky, a Miata, or a Mazda 3. Lots of great cars that can be had for somewhere around the ~$20k pricepoint. Just test drive what you're interested in, and go from there, haters be damned.

The V6 version will be well under 20K with all the specials going on, and if you're planning on keeping the car (no worries about resale value), the 10-year warranty is second to none.

Not sure about car prices in the US but from what I've heard they're much cheaper than they are here in Australia. I'm not a car nut by any means but I always loved my V6 Turbo sedans. Goes fast, can fit the kids (not that I have any yet), groceries whatever you throw at it, has 4 doors, no nagging wife 😛 Excessive fuel consumption is a minus tho 🙁
