The topic says it all, and I know its "old". I enjoyed it quite alot once I got over my hatred for JarJar... after the 5th time seeing it in the theatre, he got actually likable. However, it seems that people say this movie isn't regarded as anything more than a piece of crap? why? Its a typical Star Wars movie, nothing has changed in the formula at all except instead of using models, they used CG. EP1 was shunned from all the awards, not even given a Special Effects nod. grrr...

so whats the word? liked it or no?

I liked it, good entertainment, I thought the old ones were extremely overrated.

I didn't like it as much as the original trilogy, but unlike Czar, I don't think that those are "extremely overrated". I think that A New Hope was an amazingly innovative and well-executed movie.

The Phantom Menace was a little, I don't know, cartoonish, I guess? I think Jar Jar was just kind of "out of place"... he was comic relief almost purely directed at children.

But hey, if "Dude, Where's My Car?" would have had The Force and lightsabre battles, I probably would have gone to see that too. :)

Edit: No, I don't like Ewoks either.

It was more a show of technology then that of acting and storyline. It just seemed like it was made for the little kids to me...

They should have not used as much CG as they did. Having a 100% CG character was a dumb idea.

it was ok, not nearly as good as the first three, but I've seen them like 20 times, and phantom menace only a few. solo, and chebacca added better lighten ness than having it all be in one character like jar jar.

I liked it as much as I did any of the others.

How can you put down Jar-Jar after the teddy bears?

Lucas loses all of his films to the touchy feely emotions he tries to elicit making all SW mostly for children.

Even Darth had to wimp out at the end.

Ill still go see all the future episodes but will imagine what they could have been.

What did you expect from all the hype? I did not go in thinking it would be the greatest movie ever. I didn't bite into the hype. I thought it was a cool movie...

I thought it was a fun movie. Nothing exceptional, but the lightsaber battles were cool. If it was out on dvd, I'd buy it. Unfortunately, that's not an option.

I didn't mind Jar Jar while watching it, but I HATED THE KID!!!! Esp. after "The Sixth Sense" proved that child actors don't HAVE TO suck!

I thought the Ep. 1 writing was a bit clunky (Lucas brought on a co-writer for Ep. 2) and they were trying to stuff a bucket of story into the frame. But, at the beginning when they showed the Flash Gordonesque viewscreen, I realized that Lucas was making a hopped-up Saturday Matinee and got into the spirit of things.

The fact that the Pod Race alone didn't bring home the Visual Effects Oscar (losing to the Gap ad recycling "The Matrix") shows what a bunch of retarded playa hatas are in the Academy. (If "Crouching Tiger..." doesn't get a Best Picture nom, I'm gonna bust a cap!)

"Jedi" was the worst. F*cking teddy bears, BAH!:|

phantom menace was juvenile and idiotic in dialogue, conception,
and story. lucas destroyed the artistic integrity of the previous
films because he's become the polar opposite of the small
'independent' film maker he began as, with a daring original
idea no large studio thought fit to finance. now he's larger
than any of the major studios carrying around an old idea he
can recycle and milk for gobs of loot.

phantom menace simply redid many of the scenes and relationships
found in the previous three films and threw in more childish elements
to appeal to as broad a demographic as possible for maximum box office
benefit. for lucas' integrity, it was cannibalistic and commercial
self-exploitation. lest we forget, this is the same dude who brought
us howard the duck.

I liked it, but it was no where as good at the first trilogy. The reason the first three movies are better is because it was fresh. Now we all know what is going to happen, it's just the details in between that we are seeing now.

After a while it started to grow on me.(like fungus) I dont know if it's not as good as the first series or if I had too high expectations for Phantom. It was a little thin, for the amount of things going on it could have been a 6 hr movie.

I liked it quite a bit - better than Jedi, not as good as ANH or Return (my favorite!). Jar-Jar never bothered me because I saw it with my kid brother who loved him. He was 6 - exactly the right age for Jar-Jar... I was 6 when I saw the old ones. Thats who it really for, and if JarJar made them laugh, so be it. I think a lot of fanboys spent months dreaming of some sexy, violent, dark, film-noir Star Wars... sheesh - its Star Wars for Pete's sakes! It was for us when we were 10, its for todays kids too.

Umm, folks, SW is for the younger age groups. In fact the target age is younger than most summer "blockbusters" that extend up to 21 or so. It was this way with every SW movie already released and will be for Episode 2. Get over it. :)

I liked it. Although it's not as good as SW, TESB, or ROTJ, it's still good enough that I went out and bought a copy.

As Lucas has pointed out, the most "interesting" parts of the story comprised the initial three films. Episode I is the backstory. I have high hopes for Episodes II and III.

Phantom Menace should be out on DVD near the end of the year...unfortunately it looks like the originals will not be. The Episode 1 release is rumored to be a 2 disc, possibly 3 disc set with a ton of extras.

The pod race and the final light sabre battle were both amazing film making. Rest of the movie wasn't too impressive. I'll buy the DVD simply because it's going to make an excellent reference disc.
