I run win2k at work with what is supposed to be a serial number for a copy that we paid for. I assume thats true, but I don't have the box or anything, it'd be in another state, I just trust the email I get.

Anyway windows update has worked fine for years. Then MS did their piracy reduction thing and it doesn't work at all. If I go to windows update it will sit with the green scrolling bar "checking for the latest updates" page for hours. Autoupdates don't seem to be active. The baseline security analyzer hangs.

Its not a huge concern because I run a software firewall on this PC, but should I need to drop the firewall or something I'm a prime candidate for getting all sorts of nasty things.

So whats my problem with windows update? If it was the serial, I would expect it would tell me so. At this point it looks to me like they're cause a huge inconvenience to a paying customer to try to stop piracy.

My time & date are correct, svchost.exe is allowed in the software firewall Which btw is troubling that they would change that. I bet there are a ton of people out ther who have software firewalls installed, aren't savvy, and now don't realize its not downloading updates.

i'm guessing that the firewall is not the issue, but to eliminate doubt completely, why don't you just disable the firewall while you try to run windows update?

if that fails, your best bet might just be to call microsoft.

Why not use automatic update or else doownload the update files manually and install them yourself? It saves you time when you re-install windows when you have to go to windows update site again.
