Am I the only one who thought 'Van Helsing' sucked?

OMG, it was so bad nobody in our theater knew when the movie started. I think maybe the projectionist fvcked up, because after the last preview there was no logos or anything, it just started with 'Transylvania 18xx' in black and white. The acting in this first segment was SO BAD we were all convinced it was a Coke or M&Ms commercial...we were all waiting for the punchline!!! Not a good way to start a movie...

What was the basis for this movie anyway? AFAIK, Van Helsing was the old Dutch doctor in Bram Stoker's 'Dracula'...and he didn't have superhero weapons nor any connections with the Vatican. I wouldn't have cared so much about this if the movie didn't suck. Characters were underdeveloped and the storyline didn't make any sense once we all found out Dracula's "secret" (I think the 'Addams Family' had a more sensible Dracula and Frankenstein story.) Not only that, but this whole thing about Van Helsing's mysterious past (which I assumed would be explained at the end) was never resolved...AND ITS A RIP ON JACKMAN'S 'WOLVERINE' CHARACTER!!! :| If he's mortal, than how did he fight against the Romans hundreds of years ago?

Okay so plot, characters, acting all sucked. So the movie had to be saved by the action, right? Wrong. Sure there was plenty of action, if you like 100% cartoonish CGI battles. Not only was there gratuitous CGI, but it was sucky. Who the hell moves their arms like that when they are fighting? Why do the CGI creatures keep changing scale/size relative to the rest of the environment (not talking about transformations either, it was just that bad if you noticed.) Also, the pacing of the action sucked. During the first 30 minutes there was enough action for an entire action movie, and then it was replaced by horrible dialog, horrible acting for what seemed like an hour.

I just realized now that I've ranted for 3 long paragraphs and this post will require Cliff's notes, so I'll stop here (its the damned liberal arts wannabe in me.)

Cliff's Notes:

- This movie sucks
- If you like bad CGI, go see 'Spawn' or 'The Hulk'...they are better movies...seriously!
- If you think you must see this because you're a Jackman fan, just go watch 'X2' again. Its the exact same character, some guy who likes to fight evil with a mysterious past that he can't remember, but he has nightmares and flashbacks about it.

*spoilers mentioned in this post although the subtitle of the thread also mentions spoilers*

You didn't understand the movie. You see, you came in thinking that it was an action movie. You were wrong. It's a comedy parody movie!

This is seriously one of the funniest movies of all time. How was it when Van Helsing as the werewolf picked up the dead Kate Beckinsale and howled! And Kate in the clouds? Hilarious!

I nominate Van Helsing as best comedy movie ever.

I think the beginning was supposed to be like that.... like those old-time monster movies.

The audience was laughing throughout the movie though.

Why are you saying that she wasn't in that movie? I mean it's the only good thing about the entire 'film'.

I still can't believe how they did the ending! HAHAHAHA

That's what I was thinking. The problem with that though is I don't think most people recognized it, because those old-time monster movies were made so long ago.

There were so ok parts, but the script did suck hard. I thought the action was great and the CGI was acceptable.

Kate Beckinsale was HOT in that movie. I loved the boots.

BTW, lamest creature evar: Van Helsing's Frankenstein

SPOILERS

My only complaint was they didnt explain who Van Helsing was, and his true relationship to Dracula. They didn't really explain the significance of Frankenstein considering Dracula didn't need him to create other vampires. They implied a lot, but didn't follow through on anything. It was like this was a sequel to a previous Van Helsing movie that they didn't make. I figured they gave you your $9 worth entertainment wise, but it wasn't a great movie. Lots of things I liked about it when just looking at induvidual scenes, but as a whole is fails.

this movie was so bad it made me and my friends crack up! we were laughing the entire time at the various fake accents of diff characters (the vatican guy, van helsing's man bitxh, and frankenstein's creature.

oh and did anyone else think this movie sort of mirrored james bond? i mean van helsing is 007, van helsing's companion is like Q, and the vatican dude is M?

read the other thread...

Van Helsing

AKA

Gabriel

AKA

Angel of Death

AKA

Left Hand of GOD

I thought it was obviously stated in the movie...

It's all religious...that's the Roman reference.

Everything was wrapped up nicely, yes acting was bad, but action was good, and chicks were hawt, what else to expect?

It's a League of Extreme Ordinary Gentlemen, Hellboy type movie. Yes, plot was lacking, but everything was wrapped up at the end...unless you fell asleep. Which is highly unlikely, from start to finish, the action was non-stop. You may have child/adult ADD though, I don't really know you ;)

What I wanted to know was why he ended up almost dead on the steps of the church, how an angel could suffer human afflictions like amnesia and lycanthropy, and how it can be said at one point that Dracula's brother killed him and then another that Gabriel did it. SOME was wrapped up, but there was still a ton left unanswered.

BTW, what the hell was up with that euro-trash Dracula they had? God gawd, that was a bad casting call.

that is why you get the feeling through out the movie that Van Helsing was geared towards franchise movies, like x-men (for example: the james bond type test lab in rome :D)

however, seeing how everyone hates it, the franchise is probably over ;) I enjoyed it, because I didn't go into the movie thinking it was going to be some big epic film. No, I went in fully knowing I will get bad acting and cheesy lines. Instead, I concentrated on the special effects and enjoyed the horror. You really shouldn't go into this type of movie thinking it's going to be the best you ever saw...

I thought the story flowed well. However such comprehension depends on the fact that you need to stop hitting that bong 12 hours before you see a movie ;) And the fact that people who have no idea about religion will have no hold on what Van Helsing is about..

saw it today, hadn't heard of it prior, never saw a trailer or anything

i liked it
the acting was great...but it wasn't terrible
the plot wasn't great...but it wasn't terrible
the cgi and effects weren't the best i've seen...but they were good
kate's outfit kept giving me the optical illusion that her boostacles were hanging out...then again, i'm a big prevert
