Am I the only one who thinks Assassin's Creed sucks? I bought part one for $9 at Gamestop. Part three is coming out real soon so I figure I'd try it out to see what the hype is about. GOD the controls are horrible. They are not precise at all and when you try to climb on things, most of the time you're not going where you are intending to go. Climbing in general plain sucks and when it's such a big part of the game, it hurts it immensely. Also "hiding" from everyone is extremely repetitive and it's basically the same all the time. Plus the field of view of enemies is laughably bad. Combat is boring as well with the one button. Gathering info is basically the same as well. I can understand that games get better and part two may be better than part one but games like Uncharted or Mass Effect where part two is generally regarded better than part one, the first one wasn't unplayable. This game is so repetitive, how do people enjoy this? I have zero desire to play any other games in the series because this one was so bad. It's a cool concept but sucks in execution.

The first is BY FAR the worst in the series. It's still fun, but yes, repetitive. That said, II, Brotherhood and Revelations are simply amazing games.

The first game is terrible. Dull and repetitive gameplay, awful controls, wooden characters, weak story, buggy. I really hated Altair. He's just a mindless, empty killing machine. No motive, no back story, no evolution of the character. How this game was getting 8 and 9 out of 10 on so many review sites boggles my mind. It's a 5 or 6 at best.

ACII was a much better game. Fixed controls, strong story and characters, more varied missions, smoother combat. It's a masterpiece, one of Ubi's few titles that's worth it's praise. Brotherhood and Revelations are good too. I think I liked Brotherhood best out of the two spinoffs.

Am I the only one who thinks the games would be better without the modern day stuff? The whole 2012/Animus/Desmond Miles thing never stuck it with me.

It's fairly safe to say everybody is right there with you regarding AC1. However, AC2 is excellent and Brotherhood is fun. I really enjoy the story, both past and present, as it's presented. I still have to finish Revelations and then I'll pick up AC3 when it goes on sale.

What are you guys talking about? There was no part 1. Nope, it doesn't exist.

AC2 and Brotherhood are really good though. I bought Revelations a while back but never ended up finishing it. It was a good game, and maybe it was just me getting tired with the formula, but I just didn't enjoy it as much as the other two. I don't like how complex the assassin training and missions were getting, and I don't really care for the tower defense mini game either, or the bombs and wish they weren't forced on you so much. I don't think I got very far in the game, so maybe if I had just stuck with it I would have played it through.

I haven't been following news on AC3, but I assume since it's numbered in the title there's supposed to be major changes? Maybe that will renew my interest in the games.

Meh, after 1, I could never get into 2. Early on 2 is OK, but it also dragged on and didn't pass the "I'll finish it" test. We'll see if Borderlands 2 passes that test though - not much does that's open world.

I played AC 1 when it was new on 360.

I'm a HUGE fan of the stealth genre. Have been since Thief: TDP years ago, and subsequently with the SC games.

I HATED AC 1. Hated it. The controls were wonky, the missions were boring and repetitive, and the characters were wooden, but most of all, I thought the wretched "sci-fi virtual reality plot" was utter shit. I'm sorry, it was just stupid.

I haven't bothered with any of the others, but since I keep hearing AC II and the others are huge improvements, I eventually will get around to giving them another shot. But 1 left a bad taste in my mouth.

Have you tried Crackdown 1? I had a lot of fun with the climbing, jumping and killing in it though it was RoboCop meets Spider-Man instead of a stealth game.

Crackdown 2 was OK but not nearly as good.

Agreed - not many good stealth games come around these days. Heck, even Thief was a little wonky at times - but still TONS of fun. I'd rank Thief 2 up there with Deus Ex 1 and System Shock 2. Thief 3 was alright, but not as good.

The first game is terrible...
I found all past that to be a vast improvement.

Revalations was a great game and i am looking forward to ACIII big time. From what i have read about wilderness it seems like more of a sandbox style type of play, much like GTA.

I could not even get into AC2 so 1 must be horrible. I felt 2 was very repetitive for the first 20 hours. Does it get any better?

Assassin's Creed was one of the games that I was really, really looking forward to and it disappointed pretty badly. broke my heart and i never fully recovered from it. i know AC II, brotherhood are awesome and i was impressed when saw others playing it. the new AC III looks incredible. but i will not bother playing any of these because the first one ruined the whole experience for me. too bad...

Every single thread that anybody has ever started asking about playing through AC1 had the same answer: stay the ef away from it. Read a quick plot synopsis and jump right into 2 and don't look back.

Assassin's Creed doesn't seem so bad when you just keep this in mind... the game is a giant tech demo. I vaguely remember hearing all the hype from Ubisoft lauding all the crazy, innovative stuff that you could do in the game. The problem is... that's really all the game has. The story is nifty, but not told all that well, and Altaïr is incredibly boring of a character.

One of my largest frustrations in the game is the fact that you cannot swim. This wasn't a huge problem throughout most of the game, but it became terribly exacerbated during one of the levels where you needed to assassinate a guy that was way out by a lighthouse. The easiest way to get there without having a billion guards on your ass was to hop between wooden pillars coming out from the water. The problem with this is something that you hinted at... the accuracy. I had so many problems where I would push the joystick at the next pillar and Altaïr would either just miss it or jump the wrong way. This resulted in an instant death. :|

Assassin's Creed II is LEAGUES better than the first game. The story is much more fleshed out, the characters are far more interesting, and EZIO CAN SWIM! However, I'm not sure if I can agree much about Brotherhood at least. The story seems a lot weaker and it feels like more of a quick cash grab to help fund Assassin's Creed III. I got bored after I freed all 10 Borgia towers and stopped playing it. I do really need to finish it and Revelations before Assassin's Creed III comes out in two weeks.

One thing that I've been curious about... how the hell are they going to do an Assassin's Creed movie? The first game has a basic plot to it, but so little is fleshed out in the middle that it just will not work well for a movie. Altaïr is also not interesting enough to be a main character in a movie, but you can't just skip over the first game's content as introducing Desmond is pivotal to the story.

Altair gets fleshed out a little more in Revelations. They'll never do a movie based on the first game though. Simply due to the Christian vs Muslim themes of the crusades. Hollywood won't rock that kind of boat in a mainstream blockbuster.

I'm in the clear minority here, but I enjoyed the original Assassin's Creed despite the repetitiveness of the gameplay. Completing all of the side missions gave you clues to put together a strategy for your assassination target as well as set up advantageous routes of attack or escape. I felt like the additional effort was rewarded, even if the things you had to do were not always the most exciting.

That being said, the improved combat options in the sequels greatly improved the franchise.

I have bought every game in the main AC series, but only after their prices drop to $30.
  1. I thought 1 was okay, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I like to 100% games if I am able, but I haven't gone back for those stupid flags.
  2. 2 was great.
  3. I liked Brotherhood the best so far, but it's the same formula as 2 with extra polish.
  4. I haven't opened my copy of Revelations.

Since Desmond is an important part of the story, and the first game introduces him, I just don't see how you could ignore any of that. I don't see too much of an issue with the Crusade being a background topic in the movie as Richard is shown to be a rather cool dude near the end. :p

If you think Brotherhood felt like filler, wait till you get to Revelations. I quit brotherhood after I got pretty far into the game just because it didn't feel fun anymore. Plus IMO the visuals and controls took a step back in Brotherhood, though I couldn't put my finger on exactly what was changed between AC2 and Brotherhood. Revelations is exactly like brotherhood except Ezio is older, except at least Brotherhood has the DaVinci mini-missions which helped spice things up a bit IMO. Revelations doesn't really have that from what I've seen thus far. I've already slowed down playing that as it's getting boring too. We really, REALLY need the change of scenery in this franchise.

No, I also think it sucks and it's overrated. It sucks that I'll never play a new Castlevania by IGA especially with the reactor problems Japan had and now the upcoming third world war in which China will pull an FDR on them. Even UBI Soft makes too much crap these days and they don't make all the stuff I'd want for the PC (although honestly, nvidia's drivers could be fixed and better so that games used that used the W-buffer, for instance, would look like the way they were meant to be played and not have an S-load of problems)

I miss the days when Japanese developers made more games but the days in which they did are over. EA and Activision are going to get even worse when Romney gives them direct subsidies in the form of their very own cash. Bush gave EA free advertising and that was awful because EA knew it didn't matter if they turned people off by advertising Bush because of their IP monopoly... the NFL lasted for way too long. I only see IP getting stronger and that's a problem because it props up inefficiency.

Wow, I mean that was such a crazy response. Did you take off your foil hat to post this?
