Am I the only one who thinks a 'paraprofessional' is useless?

They seem to suck the money out of the education system by overpaying these individuals more money than regular teachers and shoving every kid they see into their programs.. We either have a lot of retarded children or this is the equivalent of kids being diagnosed with ADD...

In my school district, paras get paid minimum wage to bust their arses. They do all the 'dirty' work, especially when handling the disabled.

When I was a para, I had to change mentally disabled school aged children's diapers, help feed them, clean up after them etc. I also gave them a lot of compassion and love.

At minimum wage, I think the school district got a very good deal out of me.

Also, in my school district, the only paras in regular ed are the kindergarten aides. We get 1 aide per 40 students, which means that every 2 teachers share an aide.

If you've ever worked with 20 five year olds, you would realize that you DO need someone to help you at different points during the day.

I don't know where you are from, but where I am from, aides are very valuable and priceless because it is hard to get people to take such low paying yet work intensive positions.

Paraprofessionals are those people who help teachers but are not teachers themselves. They can be assistants of sorts. I would think they are usually found in non-typical classroom settings such as special education, ESL, bi-lingual and so forth.

And, for the record, I have always thought they busted their ass just like everybody else and they sure as hell don't get paid a heck of a lot more than teachers.

Well, last time I checked they arrived to school through a normal means of transportation, none of them have autism, you CAN have a normal conversation with them, they don't look 'different' from everybody else, they don't take any medication (that I'm aware of at least), so I would come to the conclusion that they're simply stupid but the state/councelors and crap insist on putting them in these expensive programs for no benefit at all..

That's one of the reasons I left special ed..... why specialize when there is no extra value put on it?

Paraprofessional positions in my district are the ones that don't require any type of degree. They can range from the classroom assistants mentioned above, office secretaries, janitors, cafeteria workers, maintenance workers, low level helpdesk and technicians, etc, etc. While they don't get paid minimum wage, they don't get paid great for the grunt work that they do.

Wow, are you in special education yourself?

So, first of all what do you want? Do you want kids that need extra assistance to travel to and from schools in a special bus to further stigmatize their condition? Additionally do you want people that may have a mental handicap to have some physical ailment as well? Should we make them all wear a scarlet "R" for Retardation?
Hate to break it to you junior, but not all mentally and emotionally problems have a physical manifestation. Furthermore other learning impairments may not necessarily be exhibited by having a 'normal' conversation with them (e.g. dyslexia).

Here is what I figure: You are some kid who thinks they know everything or otherwise has a superiority complex. The deal is you are not special nor seemingly more intelligent than average. In fact my pet rock seems to display greater critical thinking skills than you exhibit. Perhaps it is not totally your fault, maybe your teachers were so busy trying to teach the test they never tought you how to think. I don't know.
Maybe I am wrong about you; however that makes things even worse. If you are somebody actually over the age of 18 and thought you were clever to come to these conclusions, then . . . wow, that's sad.

Anyhow, instead of trying to drag people's lives down and/or otherwise speak disingenuously of them, how about you take a more proactive role and do what you can to help others (e.g. tutor).
