Am I the ONLY one who purchased a Parhelia?

Am I the ONLY one who purchased a Parhelia?

No, there is one other in Canada🙂

To me it sounds like a good solid card. Problem with it was that is wasn't as fast as Matrox was touting it as.

actually, i'd say the problem is the insane price.

Bingo !!! We have a winner.

If it would cost closer to the price of a Radeon 8500 then I am sure a lot of people would be running one.

Considering that I saw the Radeon 9700 Pro online for $319, I don't think you'll be finding many more Parhelia owners 😀

Parhelia the edsel of computers.
😀

Well it is certainly worth the price of admission for me anyway. . .although this doesn't hold true for everyone. Three monitor support is really cool, increases my productivity by a bunch. 2D is crispy clear, no more squinting at blurry text at 1600x1200, and the image quality in games is quite pronounced. . .FAA is the best thing since sliced bread IMHO. And it has enough horsepower to handle the next gen games as well. And yes, I do wish it were faster than it is now, but I'm still glad that *I* purchased it.

We all make mistakes BCompDude, dont feel insecure 😛. I must admit the idea of 3 LCD's is sweet though.

Parhelia is a beautful dream for me .
or chinese .

beacuse we earn so little .does like you. or usa. the modle coutry .

301 ? us dollers ?that is lot of money !!!!!

but i think for usa people that such a piece of cake !

that is why you can buy it .

Otherwise, a great card, no?

WebDude😉

Uhh, NO!!

If the price sucks and the performance sucks, then why buy it? 😀 I mean, not many people have three monitors laying around so that's an extra couple hundred $$$ to fully utilize it's features. Also, ATI's 2D quality is quite sharp to me and I use DVI on my GF4 Ti4200 so 2D quality is a non-factor.

If you HAVE to have three monitors, I GUESS it could be a decent solution...but I personally would pick up a Radeon 9700 Pro and a decent PCI graphics card IF I needed to use three monitors.

I don't think matrox was touting it to be a super killer card......... I think it got over hyped by people expecting it to be so damn good. I think it's a pretty good attempt to get back into the 3D gaming & professional markets.......... hopefully htey can learn frrom thier mistakes.

Cheers,

...what LiWei said here is right.

Beijing people, the rich, have a monthly income of 500$.

People in the town where I live have a monthly income closer to 250$ for the average computer enthusiast.

Who here would be happy shelling out one month's worth of income to get performance similar to an 8500 when you can get something like a Ti200 for 75$?

Heh..

Agreed. They have been in the business sector with the millenium series for quite a long time and they do well in the professional (graphics and such) market as well because of their multihead solutions and top notch 2D. The parhelia continues on this tradition and continues on it excellently. It was also supposed to be a gaming card though and it's not where it should be for the price. However, it is a great first step back into the 3d gaming market - with a few adjustments (occlusion culling, smaller core, etc.) this card could be a real screamer. I think I read that anand said that Matrox would be refreshing this card in the spring (late winter? I can't remember) so, perhaps a lower price, and higher performance will put Matrox on the 3D gaming map again like the G400 MAX did a few years back. 🙂

Gee, I thought Electric Amish was the AT Matrox evangelist 🙂
I was actually very hopeful about it before it was released. I knew it wasn't gonna be able to keep up with the latest and greatest, but I thought it'd at least provide GF4 Ti4200 level performance, that'd be a great start for Matrox. Anyway, let's hope they use the Parhelia as a springboard and release a Parhelia 2 with full DX9 compliance running at higher clock/memory speeds. Perhaps then it'd be competitive to at least the regular Radeon 9700.

The problem with it is that it is a niche market. For gamers? Hardly, unless you're an RPG or sim fan that wants surround gaming. Those are few and far between. For workstation use? Regular G400/450/550s and ATI Radeon cards offer decent 2d at a fraction of the price (and supports dual head). For photoshop/CAD use? Its a niche market again. Photoshop poeple may want it solely for photoshop, but its CAD performance is poor, and it'd be worth it to shell it more money for a 3dLabs Wildcat VP with better image quality and much better 3d performance.

I'm pretty game-centric for my personal graphics buying needs, but If I were setting up my own system for development the triplehead feature (with Matrox desktop manager) would be an easy sell. Matrox's niche is that you can get this functionality plus a card which can play games (albeit much slower).

NFS4, that was a bit of humor on my part. Sorry you didn't get it. (Like if it's expensive and doesn't perform that well, what else is there to know, eh?)
