I buy a book, read it, then buy a second copy to collect. I've got at least two of each book I've enjoyed and even three copies of the LOTR series + The hobbit. Am I insane?

Go ahead and collect them if you want but at least donate or sell the ones you've already read.

That's pretty much what I mean, DJHeater. When I'm done with the first one, I'll lend it out and put the new one on the shelf for collecting. That way I have a nice mint copy for display, and a rough copy to toss around.
What happens when they want to re-read the book? Then they'll have to go buy another new copy.
Its a bit odd, but I wouldn't say stupid.
I personally would actually rather have a well used copy if I was collecting. I don't know why, but worn books just seem better to me.

I have backup, plastic wrapped copies of my favorite CDs in my underwear drawer in case a nuclear war prevents me from aquiring further copies of said music.

It's possilbe to read a book without wearing it much. Simply don't open a paperback more than 90 degrees and be careful not to bend the cover or pages.
I collect books, but only collectable ones. If I pick up a paperback at a yard sale and like it, then I'll be on the lookout for a first edition of it at later yardsales.
I have a lot of complete sets of first edition hardcovers from many authors. If it's a popular book and sold say 100,000 copies in first edition, after a couple years they will show up at yard sales for $2 each.
Every once in a while, something rare will show up too.

I'm constantly moving (bus, school, work, home) so I can never just put a book away, it's always tossed into a bag screwing up the corners. Also, depending on the state of my hands, (I work in a garage) the colour of the pages change on the bottom and sides.
Let's not change the topic at hand, everyone has their own taste in music.
I don't think a library would be too happy about having a destroyed book returned.
