I don't know about you, but I highly believe in the author getting paid his due share if I like something.

I still purchase cd's online when I find something I really like, which is mostly stuff like techno, rave, jungle, bass & drum, etc. I also have alot of Anime fansubs that I've replaced with DVDs because I love a show so much. I've even got LDs and picked up the DVDs when they were available for a few titles! I mean, it really doesn't hurt the pocketbook that much and for me, I actually feel proud of having the shelves lined with authentic movies. I even got quite a few Japanese CD's which are rather expensive!

Anyone agree/disagree? How do you add a poll?!?
 
The fact still remains that CDs are selling at a 'record' rate even with Napster. That is a big part of Napster's argument.
 
Honestly this 'trail' idea just doesnt work out

why would ANYONE buy the SAME SONGs after they have downloaded it onto their HD and maybe burnt onto a cd or something

that argument is just not strong

i personally love napster
but they just dont have any strong arugments

what i sugest is that they become a file sharing program instead of JUST a Mp3 sharing program
THEN people wont be able to sue them as easily
since you are just opening a FTP or sth then
 
[rant] I don't get this self-imposed guilt used to force oneself to buy CDs. You think any artists feel any responsibility to you to not release a CD with only one good song and the rest crap? Of course not. Do you think the record industry isn't purposely trying to take advantage of you the way that music is released? Do you think that the money that many bands charge for live shows is fair and reasonable? Of course not. Do you think Stephen King gets angry when you read his book at the library instead of buying it? Of course not. If you listen to a song, then delete it, I personally don't see the problem (I know the law; lawyers make laws). The revolution has begun (in this specific industry half b/c of demand, and at least half b/c of the nature of the music industry), and using guilt isn't going to help the jerk-off record companies go back to yesterday. I have bought about 15 CDs b/c I heard music on Napster, but that isn't b/c I felt the poor, starving artists deserve money. I just wanted a copy that I can listen to in my car. [/rant]
 
I buy more, because this way I don't have to risk buying bad CD's. Any people that like audio quality in a car, a 192 rip is nothing compared to a bought CD.

Of course you can always make a CD from your mp3 files.

Yes, I just bought 4 CDs this week. And I knew exactly what was on them and couldn't be disappointed since I previewed them.

I belong to a record club and pay less than $7 a CD. However, I no longer feel &quot;rushed&quot; to buy the latest release since I have immediate access to them.

Face it, CD quality is much better than MP3 - for a quality audio system. Plus you get the CD booklet etc.. However, I have a lot of cassettes from years past that sound rather poorly now. These I am replacing with MP3s burned to CDs.
 
I've bought more CDs since Napster.

I'm not going to appreciate a second rate computer file over the tangible product of a CD with liner notes, lyrics and photos.

Besides, there's a certain &quot;guilt&quot; involved with downloading an entire album with no intention to purchase.

If you do not feel the same guilt, then truly you are a thief at heart.
 
I bought seceral CDs the past couple months that I never would have bought except that I downloaded the mp3s and liked them.
 
Well, I use Napster and I refuse to buy CD's. However, I do buy large amounts of tape cassettes. Usually what I use Napster for is to download songs that I already have on LP and burn them to CD because it is so much easier than hooking my turntable up to the computer to digitize a few songs. I should note that this method is 100% legal. The reason I buy tape cassettes is because my 1988 Accord LXi only has a tape deck and the factory stereo is quite good enough that I have no intention of spending $200 for a CD deck (I don't do things half-assed). Usually I hook up my walkman to the computer and digitize the album from the tape cassette as soon as I get it home. A good tape cassette on a player with a clead head digitizes nicely, almost all of the background noise can be eliminated by adjusting the audio properties. As an aside, the newest tape decks in cars sound much worse than the one in my 12 year old Accord, and it's not the speakers because the AM/FM recievers sound better. I think that tape cassette technology has undergone a backslide, especially considering a Nakimachi tape deck playing back a Type IV Metal tape cassette sounds as good as my CD player.

Not all people have burners. They d/l the songs for home, if they like 'em, they might buy em for the car/discman/etc.

Not me, I have a burner, nor my friends, because they leech off my burner, but theoretically...

I have a very large collection of MP3's (over 39 gigs). I also have a 12x CD burner. I can pump out a audio cd in less than 6 minutes. BUT I also have bought tons of cds. I constantly join BMG and columbia house....buy the 6 or 7 cd's...cancel and start over...
I also go to the local music stores and buy cd's all the time.

The only thing napster has done to me is cost me $250....for a harddrive to fit all the mp3's on.

Yes, you are the only person who still buys CDs after napster. Everyone else in the World uses napster for music purposes. They all don't buy CDs, cuz they can get their Limp Bizcrap for free. They all have computers with burners and cd players, and everything you have...cuz you are the standard in which the world should live by...

Well, SackOfAllTrades, Dude was obviously referring to a select audience - Us - the Forum members that all have use of a computer.

Clearly, his topic title was not meant to say he was the only one on the planet that still buys CDs after Napster. It was obviously meant to stimulate discussion. He had a point of view that he still buys CDs even though he can download mp3s.

Most of the other replys agreed with him (about 5:1 in favor of still buying CDs) and understood the topic.

However your sarcasm is appreciated.

BTW, you can reply without a keyboard if you have a voice recognition system well-trained. &quot;Psychic text inputing devices&quot; are still in R&amp;D stage.

Hell yeah I still buy CDs. I know that this is how the artist makes a living and that need fans to support them. I listen to a lot of bands that would kill to sell even 100,000 discs, for them every purchase counts.

Napalm, I feel your pain. I also listen to alot of &quot;non-mainstream&quot; music. To most people, the music I like is &quot;noise&quot;. To me, it's very good music. 🙂

The biggest band/group I listen to of this type of music is probably Prodigy, Aphex Twins, ASR, Garbage, Smashing Pupkins, Curved Space, Mystic Space, Antiloop, Orbital, Voight Kampf, etc, etc.

Heh, like I said, noise to everyone else. =)
