self service is against the law in NJ, so every gas station is full service... no one tips the gas station attendants.

WTF?! Are you serious? What kind of bassackward state is NJ?

Try to make a left hand turn in NJ 😉

? I don't get it. I've never been to NJ.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petrol_stations

The same article also indicates that there are other (likely larger) contributing factors such as the relatively large number of refineries in the area and lower state taxes.

the article says that makes the gas CHEAPER in those states. i said that cost, to the stations - all other things being equal, is about even because they dont have to deal with people stealing gas. the article mentions that studies have shown that these mini service stations affect cost to the consumer negligibly. of course it is wikipedia

not having to get out of your car in the freezing cold and pouring rain = a good thing. and it's not as if gas prices are notably more expensive here than in any of the self-serve states.

I think it's the same in Oregon.
i don't know where you are, but where i am, it sure as hell isn't freezing cold and pouring rain every day. i can save money and time by doing it myself, thanks. you can enjoy your no-choice law.

I really dont see how it saves time, or money.

i'm not waiting in lines for the attendant to come out, waiting for him to come back from someone else when the pump shuts off so he can overfill my tank to the next dollar, wait for him to run around to take care of the credit card transaction, sign the slip thing, you know.

i can just get out, pump the gas, get a car wash code if i want, and pay right there in like 0 seconds. also there is no premium for self-serve like there is for full.

In my experience, the wait isnt bad at all, and at most stations your card is swiped immediately right at the pump and handed right back to you. If you pay cash, you never have to go into the store to pay. Honestly, the time of waiting for the attendant(s) is negligible when compared to physically getting unbuckled, and out of your car.

For me, being a quadriplegic, its a godsend. Here in Indiana, getting gas takes me around ten minutes, since I either have to call the station if I can find the #, wait for the employee to become available, come pump, often they go inside to man the counter while i'm filling up, come back out when they arent busy, and unhook me. Sometimes I have to get out and go in to ask. Getting in and out takes me no less than five minutes too.

Cost, you can speculate all you want, but a full service fee isnt listed anywhere (all though im sure its paid somewhere) and literally, enter NJ from any state around it, and gas is much cheaper. I'll stay in my car and pay a little extra, and still pay less than you, thanks.

wait a sec. You're a quadriplegic? How do you pump your own gas let alone DRIVE?!

Woah! :Q

Does that handle on the right work as a throttle/brake? Forward to go and backward to stop?

Your arms must move somewhat, right? You can't be a total quadriplegic.

How were you injured? How do you browse the forums?

Jughandles my friend...jughandles. Only slightly weirder are Michigan lefts.

No one tips the gas station attendants in Jersey. It's just part of their job and yes gas is some of the cheapest around. Usually about 15 cents/gallon cheaper than where I live in DE. Typically it is quicker to pump it yourself but it depends on what time of day and all that. Not having to get out of your car when it's cold/raining/etc more than makes up for it.

Yup, thats gas/brake. Quadriplegia just means four limbs are affected. My fingers dont work, and my triceps dont work. I broke my neck diving, and I use a regular keyboard and mouse, albeit with different techniques than most. 😉

What do you guys think?

If you have the option of going to a self service or full service line and choose full service, you should tip.

If full service is the only option your state allows, then you should not tip.

We're not self-serve states, we're free market states. And the fact that very few of the gas stations in our free market states are full-service should tell you that it's not as good a thing as you think.

That doesn't matter. The majority of gas stations are covered. Maybe not in NJ. What on earth is behind such a ridiculous law?

The job (or two) synthesized

It's a law in NJ because we are overpopulated and people cannot afford to waste time waiting for some fat ass to get out of his / her car to do such thing on his / her own.

It moves traffic faster I guess!

Only some turns use jughandles, which makes it even worse. You don't know if your turn will be on the right or the left.

I wasn't aware that it was freezing cold and pouring rain every day all year round in NJ, and that roofs were outlawed when put over gas pumps.

Doesn't sound like a very good state to me. 😛

If you choose to go to a Full Service place and they do extra stuff while pumping your gas such as clean the windshield, check your oil, etc... Then I could see giving them a small something. But if the price of gas there is already higher simply because it's full service, then no.

It's not that bad... if you know the area, you know which side its on, and there are always signs in advance. What annoys me is when people ignore the signs and then try to force their way over at the last second. Every single time I go through the Somerville circle, I get one or more jackholes attempting the equivalent of a left turn across a lane of moving traffic. I see it everywhere. People don't plan ahead for where they need to go, they get in the lane that moves the fastest or at a stoplight they get in the shortest line.

I think it's probably slower on average, because when they're busy you sometimes have to wait for the guy to get to your car. I think the reason we don't have self-serve gas stations is because politicians don't want to pass a law that will cost thousands of people their jobs - even if they are crappy jobs. And gas station attendant is one menial job that has managed to avoid being overtaken by Mexicans. Perhaps when the Mexicans take over the gas stations, then the politicians will reconsider.

It does cost us more but not anywhere close to what people in other states pay for self-serve. They charge an extra ~$.20 a gallon for self-serve (if available at all), but that's because hardly anyone uses it. In NJ the $6 an hour they pay the attendant is divided over the hundreds of gallons they pump, so the difference is minimal.

The thing is, since we've always had full service only, our gas stations aren't really set up like in other states. Gas stations in other states are usually a convenience store with 10+ pumps. In NJ our convenience stores and gas stations are usually separate, and the gas stations often only have 2 or 4 or some small number of pumps.

I think they have that law so that there are plenty of jobs available (gas station attendants.)

And to the OP: It's not their fault that the price of gas is going up.

That is just stupid IMO, and only leads to higher prices in gas for that state.

If it hasn't already been posted a dozen times before, NO, you don't tip gas station attendants.

Yep, it is silly. But that's the entrenched mindset we have in Oregon. Can't have self-service because that would put the gas station attendants out of work. And because the neighboring states of Washington and California have higher taxes (and thus higher gas prices), no one seems to be able to speak against it.
