Am I supposed to tip at those full service gas stations?

self service is against the law in NJ, so every gas station is full service... no one tips the gas station attendants.

Honestly, I think they expect tips. Way back when all stations where full service, the guys would almost always get a tip.

not having to get out of your car in the freezing cold and pouring rain = a good thing. and it's not as if gas prices are notably more expensive here than in any of the self-serve states.

I think it's the same in Oregon.

Don't have that over here, but i think 15% of the total price would be reasonable. Maybe i should look into this as a business opportunity! haha

No, that's too much. Tipping 50 cents or whatever you have in your change drawer is reasonable.

Tipping 15% on a $40.00 tank of gas = $6.00. That is far from reasonable.

Sure it is a good thing, but not everyone wants to pay a premium for that service. Sure, I could pay for Papa Johns to deliver to my apartment, but I prefer to save $3 and walk the 200 yards to the place.

Shoo, cool. I stopped in Middlesex to fill up once and didn't tip, good to know. If he had wiped down the windows then I probably would have.

Gas in NJ is some of the cheapest I've seen anywhere in this country.

its not a premium price though. gas in New Jersey is always about 10 cents cheaper than it is in New York State, where you have to pump it yourself. i always try to get gas in NJ when possible while in the NYC area as its cheaper AND they do it for you

Yes, you do. While gas might be relatively cheap there, it would be CHEAPER if full service was not mandated.

i'm not waiting in lines for the attendant to come out, waiting for him to come back from someone else when the pump shuts off so he can overfill my tank to the next dollar, wait for him to run around to take care of the credit card transaction, sign the slip thing, you know.

i can just get out, pump the gas, get a car wash code if i want, and pay right there in like 0 seconds. also there is no premium for self-serve like there is for full.

The same article also indicates that there are other (likely larger) contributing factors such as the relatively large number of refineries in the area and lower state taxes.

In my experience, the wait isnt bad at all, and at most stations your card is swiped immediately right at the pump and handed right back to you. If you pay cash, you never have to go into the store to pay. Honestly, the time of waiting for the attendant(s) is negligible when compared to physically getting unbuckled, and out of your car.

For me, being a quadriplegic, its a godsend. Here in Indiana, getting gas takes me around ten minutes, since I either have to call the station if I can find the #, wait for the employee to become available, come pump, often they go inside to man the counter while i'm filling up, come back out when they arent busy, and unhook me. Sometimes I have to get out and go in to ask. Getting in and out takes me no less than five minutes too.

Cost, you can speculate all you want, but a full service fee isnt listed anywhere (all though im sure its paid somewhere) and literally, enter NJ from any state around it, and gas is much cheaper. I'll stay in my car and pay a little extra, and still pay less than you, thanks.

That doesn't matter. The majority of gas stations are covered. Maybe not in NJ. What on earth is behind such a ridiculous law?
