what i think if funny is that i had no idea this happened until the forum announcement went up. and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I saw this thread the other day and didn't read it, figured someone was just being a moron and talking about the mod discussion forum that is always there

Dude. It's an internet forum. Not like real life or anything.

I understand everyone's outrage and all. But maybe I'm just getting too old to give a shit about such things.

It's not that I give that much of a shit, but it needs to be considered. Without going into any specifics here, it's disingenuous to wave the flag shouting "Freedom rocks!"), and then being anti-freedom with your personal actions. Freedom until it inconveniences you isn't freedom at all. If people try to keep to certain ideals for the little things, it sometimes sticks for the big things. I'm interested in all this from a more philosophical standpoint. Like I said earlier. If it gets to the point I don't like it anymore, I'll just leave :^)

Last night he was talking mad shit to everyone in every forum. I have no idea what got under his skin but he was in a shitty mood for days.

Isn't he good for that every few months? Guess the local shepherd finally caught on to him.

Personal feelings have no place in policing. When power is used for personal gain, freedom is lost. See USA

I'm sure you're not that naive about human nature. Mod work is often more about judgment and less about enforcement because every situation is different. To suggest it is just "policing" is ridiculous.

People are being banned over this? Fix the breach and move on.

Issuing bans over this seems a little over the top. I wasn't here to see anything, but I guarantee there isn't anything that important in the mod forums.

I do mod work. I've defended people I personally hated from other mods because it's the right thing to do. Anything else is an abuse of power.

While I seldom agree with many of the Mod actions here any more, they don't ban people just to ban people. Something set it off.
If Mosh read something in another member's notes then contacted that member, she deserved to be banned. She was once up for a Mod position, this proves it was the right decision that she wasn't made a Mod. If the above is true...

The Mods can't read your PMs unless they change your password. You'd know as soon as you tried to log in as your password would not work.
If your password doesn't work, it doesn't necessarily mean that they changed your password and read your PMs. It probably means you are a dumb ass and forgot your password. I spent hours and hours reading emails and re-setting passwords.

They even sent idontcare in to try to cover up the situation. Pretty obvious now what was going on.

a better anology would be someone forgot to lock the bank and GA decided to walk in through the door and take the money.
No, a better analogy would be if HR forgot to lock down their files and employees were just looking through all the information to see how much each employee got paid and the complaints each employee had filed. The lookie-loos didn't physically take anything other than information. The error was reported and the company is now dealing with it to protect themselves but also the employees who had their information looked at by the Nosy Nancies.

Ya, they changed their passwords to read their PMs. Exactly as I said.

And I don't recognize "idontcare". He's probably a Mod Lite which means he knows jack squat about this place and may not have been involved in the "investigation".

No, a better analogy is that members of a local club, say the YMCA, were notified by another member that the door to the staff area was left open. Some members, instead of notifying staff or just go about their business, decide to go in to the staff area, make copies of the 'complaints' and 'disciplinary' files, then disseminated that info to the people in the files and others.

Do you really think the staff wouldn't revoke the membership of those people? It shows a complete lack of character, maturity, and respect for the organization and its' staff (many or most of whom are volunteers).

Problem is, all you seem to have is rumors.

Actually, I know it for a fact. But I'd rather not get into any more trouble than I'm already in.

Plus I think I pretty well substantiated my "rumor" of mods hacking into members accounts and rifling through PM's, wouldn't you agree?

Everything I have said in this thread is 100% true to the best of my knowledge

I wonder if they have the ability to revert back to your old password.

Right around that time, i tried logging in, and got a message "you have typed an incorrect password" .... it happens that i fat finger passwords, as i have too many, so i thought nothing of it.... tried logging in an hour later, and it worked fine.

now it could have easily been that i fat-fingered my password...

and it could easily have been that they were trying to read my IMs.

And what should be done about the members that talked about doing it, but didn't actually do it?

Whats the punishment for thought crimes?

I would never have thought that this would be a big enough deal to warrant permabans. I never saw the mod forum and never looked for it, but if I had clicked it out of curiousity I wouldn't have expected that to be a bankable offense. Must have been some really juicy stuff in there...

Well, the rumor I heard is that she was sharing screen shots from the mod forum. If it's true, she went beyond talking about it.

So yeah, I can see why you'd be afraid of getting in trouble, if your rumor is wrong.
