As an ex-cashier, I resent that remark.

First, I deal with your stupid indecisive ass on the phone with two other lines on hold while I have a dozen impatient fat bastards waiting to order cakes for all their fat friends. No matter how fast and courteous I was, the a-hole customers would always be a-holes. Thankfully there were enough nice, understanding people who had worked in the service industry before that ate there and sympathized with my plight. Compare this to servers that get "swamped" with only 4 tables. Hah.

Second, I not only process and cash out your order while you yell at me for checking ID on a credit card, I also expedite your food. I don't just sit there like an ass while the kitchen bags it up and brings it out, I have to go to the kitchen, make sure the order was received, make sure it was done correctly, box it up, get bread and other extras, then bring it back to the front.

Third, while all this was going on, I had to make sure the bakery was stocked, my trainees/bakers weren't getting slammed with orders (and if they were I had to bail them out), orders were getting prepped correctly, and if I was lucky, I was also training a new cashier who would probably quit in a month.

And you say take out people don't deserve tips. Cheapskate. :)

people who work at the 'take-out' station get paid a slightly higher hourly wage then servers. This is because they get less tips. Tipping is acceptable at 10%, not the normal 20% in the 'dine in' section.

But I agree with AzNmAnJLH tip cause you were well treated, not out of obligation.

LOL, man....no offense but hows that different from people working at fastfood and they deal with the scum of the earth customers....alot worst than customers than at a full service restaurant.
I got news for you....if you dislike the fact that servers get TIPS.....become one.

No, they do not wait on you, they do not ask to refill your glass, they do nothing but say "here's your food." They toss the food in a bag with some flimsy plastic silverware.. big woop. They are NOT expected to give the same service as a waiter. I expect a waiter to stop by my table at least once every 5-10 minutes to refill my water glass, ask if its good, offer to clear plates, etc. Takeout folks have to do none of this.

NEVER EVER EVER tip takeout. Now if they come deliver it to your house, then sure, tip them a couple bucks, but never under any circumstance, even curbside takeout from applebees, should you ever tip takeout.

I never tip for take out.

I tip the tax on most bills (14%) rounded up to the next whole dollar (so usually 17-20% I guess?). Sometimes more if the waiter was really friendly and nice and I'm feeling generous. If the service sucked, I'll either leave a cheap ass tip (like a buck), or I just pay the bill and leave.

When I come to a restaurant, I come to have a nice relaxing meal. I expect to have decent service and a friendly waiter. I don't care what your wage is. If you choose to work for a place that pays you $2 dollars an hour and expects you to make the rest off tips, that's your fault. If you want more money, work at a restaurant that pays a better wage. A tip is a privledge to the staff for making my visit enjoyable; not a right.

If you show me a good time, I treat you nicely. Sometimes very nicely.

I worked at a TGIFridays as a host for a few months a few years back, and after a late night I would often get takeout so I could take advantage of my employee discount. The first time, I went up to the takeout guy at the restaurant, placed my order and paid him, and went home and ate my food. The next time I went into work one of my coworkers told me that it's actually customary to tip the takeout guy... even if he didn't do that much work and even if you get the employee discount. I don't know the validity of that, but I started tossing him a buck or two every time I ordered takeout ribs. THey don't pay you enough at a chain restaurant, regardless of your position.

No, its not normal to tip a takeout guy. And as for the last statement, if employees don't get paid enough, learn to type or something and they can become a secretary or something.

No. You only tip when you have a good waiter/waitress, if you were at a take out window why should you leave a tip? Do you leave tips at McDonalds?

Our "take out" people make a couple dollars over minimum wage and are paid as a completely different type of employee than a server that only makes $2.13 an hour + tips.

I don't know if this is typical of other restaurants or not, but basing it on how we work, I do not pay for takeout.

Of course not.

You are already paying for the preparation of your meal. Tipping is for the extra service of having someone bring it to your table, refill your drinks, clear plates, etc. How much work is it to put your food in a bag?

I feel it's BS if they expect it. I wouldn't do it unless they walked it out to my waiting car or something..
