so i called in for take out at Olive Garden and when i got there the guy up front told me to go to the bar/take-out section for my order.
i told the guy stationed there my name for my order and he told me the total of my order was around $43.xx. i gave him $60 so he went to get my change. he later came back with my change in those black folders that you leave your credit card, money or tip in....i took my change and when he came back with my bag of take out, he described what was in the bag and that everything i needed was inside very politely. so while i was driving back i kept on wondering if i was suppose to tip him since it seemed like he was stationed only in the take-out section being very polite like a waiter... plus he did give me my change back in a tip folder.... does anyone know if it's custom to tip for take-out?

A dollar or two at a busy place where they have actual "take" out staff. Otherwise rarely.

Tipping is nice at takeout.

I worked takeout at the Cheesecake Factory, did several times more work than the servers, and got a fraction of tips and pay.

No, one of the whole points of getting food take out is so you don't have to worry about paying extra for a tip.

why? they didnt cook, prepare, or serve it to you. they just answered the phone, grabbed the stuff with your name on it, and made change.

Well, if he's just a waiter who's also helping with that station, he may just get paid the sub $4/hr that a waiter makes. If he's got a special pay scale for a situation that doesn't expect a tip, then he probably should be tipped.

As it's a chain restaurant, I say ask to speak with the manager and discuss how they staff that position to determine if tipping is appropriate.

Yeah people are actually gonna talk to the manager about paying a tip.

Yes, you should tip your takeout people. They package up your food, make your drink, make sure you have all the condiments and utensils you need. They're expected to give the same amount of service as a regular waiter, but in a fraction of the time.

Bingo

So when you get home and find out you have no knapkins, forks, sauce, whatever you are screwed. Next drive through employees are going to put out a tip jar.

If you do that, you need to start tipping Burger King, Wendy's, etc. Tipping is for the service.....which, IMO, does not include handing you your food and taking your money.

Exactly. Why tip the big corporate restaurant, but not the family owned/operated joint?

I would never tip at take out. Like others have said, you tip for service, not just for them getting you your food. You're already paying for that on the bill.
