Am I stupid for doing this...

Okay, about 40 minutes before my shift was over at work... I saw something green laying on the floor. At first I thought it was dollar until I looked from behind the counter and saw a 5 on it. So I'm thinking someone lost a 5 dollar bill. I walk around the counter to where the money is and realize that it is a 50 dollar bill. I pick it up and realize that there is two 50 dollar bills... The thought of pocketing the money had crossed my mind, but I turned it into my supervisor instead. I've been on a really big karma thing because of the speeding ticket that I got March 15. I've been trying to do good things since my court date is next Thursday in hopes that maybe some crazy force will help me out. I talked with my manager as I was cashing out my drawer to find out what the claim date would be for something like that. He kind of talked slipping off an exact answer for it, so it's starting to make me wonder about the whole thing. Should I have kept it or turned in it?

I always keep cash I found. If it turns out to be from someone's drawer, etc. then I'd give it back but otherwise there's no way to prove that it's anyone's but yours.
You did do an honest thing though.

Just the whole fact that she was in charge at the time. She said she was surprised to see how honest I was with something like that.

I would have said that you would hold on to the the money for a few days to make sure all the drawers were cashed out OK and no one came back to claim the cash. That is the most honest thing to do. I lost a $100 bill once. A nice person found it and held on to it for a couple of hours before I tracked them down. She had planned on spending it after a few days.

$100 may seem like a decent amount of cash now, but the "honesty points" you gained from your employer/supervisor will go so much further.

You got a major brownie point going for you if you ask her to be a professional reference in the future.

i think your supervisor is going to keep that cash, and use it to drink, and make fun of you in bar.
i'm totally agree when you find wallet or cash, and you know who it is belong to, you give it back.
or when someone come and ask if anybody see the cash he/she lost. you give it back.
i won't go to my supervisor, he is just going to keep it
after all, when is going to come and claim it? how many people lost $100 bill on the street, and come back to look for it 1hr later????

Was this in like a retail setting because then it changes. I would have definately turned it in because we are under constant sirvalence where I work (Walmart).

Yeah, it's a retail setting. I work at a small Spartan grocery store. Basically, I have the most responsibility for my age group considering that I'm a customer service specialist/office specialist (bank deposits and bookwork) minus the pay they get.

It's a tough situation to be in but you made the right decision. If you had taken the money, you would have a guilty feeling on your mind right now. That $100 did come out of someone's pocket, whether it was the store's or a customer's. Granted, if it was money from the store you would probably feel less guilty :)P), but it wouldn't be worth having that on your conscience.

Feel good about yourself, you did good. :D

I would have kept the money. It wasn't from a drawer so you were not stealing. If someone came in that day and asked if anyone found it, give it back to them. Otherwise you can take yourself out to a nice dinner.

<< I'd say keep it. that $100 would go a long way toward paying any speeding ticket >>

I know... I thought about that afterwards because my speeding ticket is going to cost me $110 plus the court fee. Oh well... I'll just have to see what comes of it.

Karma's always a good thing to be wary of. It was money you didn't have, so giving it up costs you absolutely nothing. Always the possibility that it was someone's rent/utility payment and now they're shafted.

A bit of "It's a Wonderful Life" in this.

Returning cash or a wallet can lead to big things. Got a job from a guy who's wallet I found in Montana. Tracked him down because the thing had over $400 cash inside. When he came to the theatre to pick it up he slapped 1 $100 bill in my palm and said give him a call. Was a great job. Ah... karma.

You did the right thing. Even if you don't get the 100 dollars, you feel good inside.
...
Right?

Yeah... I can say I feel good. I the only thing I hope for is a good outcome of my speeding ticket next week. That pretty much determines my chances of getting a newer/dependable car. I think the only way I'd be mad about the whole thing is if it is some foreigner's money that doesn't belong in our country.

You did the right thing. As for how long the claim date is, when I found a $20 at my summer job one year, the claim date was 2 weeks. After the two weeks was up, I got to keep the money.
