am I special because I've never gotten into an accident?

are you car accident free?

  • yes, I have superior defensive driving skills

  • no, I suck at driving

  • no, but it was the other person's fault

Neither have I.

But as a fellow California resident, I think we have it pretty lucky compared to many. We don't ever really have to deal with snow or ice on the roads, at least not to the degree that folks in other parts of the country do. It's easy to avoid accidents during the winter when it's 60F and clear blue skies all December and January.

I like to attribute it to my defensive driving skills. It's not the fact that I've never been in one in 33 years but the fact that I have avoided dozens by being alert, always know what is going on around, not just in front of me and never assume the other person is going to stop. Or turn just because their signal is on.

Idiots drivers have more power to make you crash than you have to prevent one. Eventually your number comes up no matter how defensively you drive. You've just been fortunate, it won't last. You could get into 3 accidents in the next month.

I think it comes with driving skill and luck. Eventually, your skill will be trumped by another person's stupidity and you'll have a wreck. Or, something you just can't account for.

I've never caused an accident but I got rear ended while making a turn (I was slowing down gradually and I had my signal on) and then sideswiped by a guy who decided to change lanes into me just two months later.

There's nothing you can do.

I've had two situations that should have been really bad accidents that somehow ended up okay.

One was while I was a passenger and did 2 or 3 complete 360's on an interstate bridge after hitting some black ice on a bridge. Some how we didn't slam the barrier or another car near us.

Other time was late at night on the interstate in terrible conditions. Road was most snow packed and you could do 50-55MPH without too many issues. Hit a random slick spot and just lost all traction. Truck fishtailed all over the place but was able to get things under control without putting it in a ditch or hitting another vehicle.

Winter weather can be rough. I'd like to claim skill in crash prevention, but those were just pure luck that no other cars were around me when they happened.

Got rear ended while I was sitting stopped at a stop light. I'd been stopped for almost a minute, guy who hit me never attempted to stop, just plowed into me. Car stopped in front of me, cars to my right--I was in the left lane, had a left turn the next stop light--and nowhere to go. Watched him in my rearview mirror. Nothing I could do. Tore his little LUV up very badly. 1992.

Got hit in the side when the idiot that hit me "didn't see me coming" and pulled right into me. I almost managed to swerve out of the way, just didn't quite make it. I drove home, idiot had to be towed. Damned idiot. 1970.

Turned a car onto its side once, playing in snow and falling into a drainage ditch that was completely covered. That one was my fault, although the car was undamaged. This was back in 1972.

Try commuting an hour each way on the 405 everyday. It'll happen.

a few years ago i was at a stop sign, waiting for traffic to clear on left so i could turn right. some bum on a bicycle was riding against traffic, and as soon as traffic from left cleared, i floored it only to knock said bicycle fool to the ground. scratched up my paint pretty good. he starts swearing and cursing that he was going to sue me blah blah blah. police came and took witness testimony and they sided with me. ambulance took guy away and his bike had a bent wheel. i felt bad for him though. now i look left THEN right, then left again, then right again, before moving forward. scratches are expensive to repair.
