Am I so seriously CPU limited with 6800GT?

Well as I said a bought a 6800GT yesterday

I ran DIII and FarCry benches at max settings and I got the following (Rig below)

DOOM III

1024x768 0AA/8AF 63.4 FPS
1024x768 2AA/8AF 61FPS
1024x768 4AA/8AF 54.4FPS
1280x1024 0AA/8AF 58.1 FPS
1600x1200 0AA/8AF 51.6 FPS

FAR CRY

1024x768 NO AA/AF 54.1 FPS
1024x768 FULL AA/AF 45.1 FPS
1280x1024 NO AA/AF 49.96 FPS
1600x1200 NO AA/AF 47.23 FPS

It's not enough games to make a comparison, but from a first look it seems that I'm seriously CPU
limited!!!
I mean look at Far Cry which is a perfect example
Am I right here or am I doin somethin wrong?

Yep I understand that I was gonna be cpu limited in the first place. WTF I don't know if there's a cpu out there that can handle it.
But look at Far Cry. So much? Is it natural or am I doing something wrong?
My score at 16x12 seems natural but my 10x7 looks low.
Any ideas?

Hey Jim, Here's some benchies I ran with the GT with various CPUs and fsb/ram speeds for you to consider link I'd say turn on AA/AF or that card is going to waste at resolutions under 16x12

Wow Far Cry is seriously more intensive than Doom 3. But how come there was no "panic" when people started to play it 3 months ago? I dont remember anyone running to the store and screaming how they want the latest and greatest hardware to play Far Cry. Arguably, the nonlinear gameplay, involvement of stealth, vast outdoor environments make Far Cry just as good. Doom 3 sounds like a capitalistic driving machine to sell more hardware.

if im CPU limited with my CPU, will i get basically free AF/FSAA if i enable it?

If the OC doesn;t work good enough, then try An Athlon64 3400+ or better. They are buch better at games at the same "rated" speed. So lets say that an Athlon643200+ newcastle at 2.2 would probably be faster than a 3600 P4. Just a close approxamation.

it's great to see games that finally pushes hardware and fully utilize their feature sets.

It's evident from pixel/vertex shading thousands of individual leaves in a vegetation-filled map in farcry versus multiple light source dynamic lighting and shadows in doom 3. yep, both are very taxing.

For Farcry the 2400+@2.2ghz, slightly slower than a Barton@that speed, is usually only 2-7fps slower than a A64 3400+ 512k@1280x1024 4x/8x. CoD I had testing issues with so I just know anything including a 1.2ghz Palomino can hit very playable frame rates with those settings. For some titles it may not be free, but it ceratinly doesn't take things from playable to unplayable either, even with a stock 2400+ setup, and I'd rather have it than not.

There were some changes in the original scores

Well now I tested again Far Cry with fresh boot and at 10x7 and 12x10 got slightly up.
I also checked full AA/AF at 10x7 and from ~54fps(no AA/AF) -> ~45fps(full AA/AF)

Also in Doom3 I added 2AA/8AF and 4AA/8AF

Doesn't change much but it makes a little more sense now.

1024x768 0AA/8AF 63.4 FPS...........
1024x768 2AA/8AF 61FPS.............
1024x768 4AA/8AF 54.4FPS.........52.9NU /64.3GT
1280x1024 0AA/8AF 58.1 FPS.........60.7NU/70.4GT
1600x1200 0AA/8AF 51.6 FPS.........46.9NU/57.6GT

Hmmm. Apparently going from a P4 2.8 > A64 3000+ makes a fairly large difference in Doom 3. Your GT scores are more in line with my NU scores.

We really dont know how far these cards can go, you are still cpu limited with an FX-55 unless you use 16x12 4xAA 8xAF or higher.... which makes no sense because theres no aliasing at 16x12 2x 8x.

Yeah that's what I figured too. I also o/c my GT to ultra levels and I only got in every benchm ~5fps more than the stock.
I'm 100% seriously cpu limited. I need to o/c that son of a gun (P4 :disgust: )

My thoughts exactly.I was planning to leave the cpu o/c for later but from what I've experienced so far with my GT I'll have to do it now.

I have an Athlon 3000+ w/ 400 FSB with a 6800GT. I am getting very low benchmarks, could this be because of my CPU being limited aswell?

Have to? Is your game unplayable? or do you just want better benches?

Doom 3 was way more hyped up. Far Cry snuck up on most people.

Yes you have a point there I don't disagree at all. But playing Far Cry at 10x7 with a GT and still not being able with that cpu to get more than 60frames is really frustrating IMHO. I mean I hardly get a 25% increase at low resolutions compared to my 9800pro.
And more games like Far Cry will appear with the time passing by,so I think you have an idea of what I'm talkin about.
Timedemos of games like Far Cry bring on the surface the weaknesses of a system (if any) so....
