yes that is right. The 640 is based on the older chipset, the 512s are based on the newer chipset

they should have called it the 9800gts but they didn't want to cannibalize 8800gtx sales. The 8800gt 512mb has the same chip as the 9000 series.

More like they should have called it the 8900GTS adn the 8900GX2 and the 8900GTX and the 8900GT and the 9600GT should be more like 8900GS

I agree. I always said that the 9-series was just a revamped 8-series (which is true), but this makes perfect, and better, sense.

That's the whole thing.

They are deliberately making the naming scheme so confusing that the average user will most definitely be confused & end up buying the slower product for more.

Quite sad really.

Fools or brilliant marketing? On the one hand they get called five-year olds by the minority market enthusiasts are but they get tons of sell and rake in the cash, on the other hand they satisfy the minority with a good naming scheme and get flamed and trolled to death about how they only refreshed their 8 series after 1.5 years.

My point is, yes, it's stupid and confusing but it works wonders for them and is the best decision they could have made, props to that.

They probably slap the highest number on the card with the highest profit margin. Lower numbered cards probably make them less money.

I always laugh because expect for enthusiasts like us who else knows what any of the numbers mean? My non-geek friends barely know the difference between memory and hard disk space.

8800? GT? GTS? GS? ULTRA? GTX? 1gig? 756? 640? 512? 340? 256?

There are like 12 different 8800's which vary widely in price AND higher price does not equal better performance! I would guess that most people who want a gaming rig know the numbers, or at the least (like the OP) know where to ask to get good information.

For all we care they could be named 8800 sheep edition, as long as it will out perform the older edition!

Yep the 8800GTS is a much improved card from the 8800GTS 320/640MB versions. It's also better than the 8800GT.

You have to hand it to ATI's latest naming scheme; while the cards aren't taking any performance crowns, the new series consists of 3830 (soon to be released), 3850 and 3870. Straightforward, logical, and clear which is faster than which.
