I have an AMD 1.4 ghz tbird with a Volcano 6 cu+ HS, and the idle temp for the proc is usually about 45-46 celcius, and under load its about 54-55-56 celcius. All i have on the HS is the thermal pad that came with it, but i'm planning to put on some arctic silver 3 within the next week.

are the temps im running at seriously too hot?

how much difference temperature-wise is new thermal compound going to make?

i have an asus a7a266 which runs at about 27 celcius most of the time.

also in case it would help to know, i have 2 case fans, on on the bottom drawing in, and one on the back blowing out.

Welcome to Anandtech!
Your temps seem a bit high to me, but if Mikewarrior2 says they're OK, go with that. His info is gold. I have a buddy that just upgraded his V-6cu to a V-7 (with a few case fan mods) and got his temps down to the mid 40's form mid 50's. Personally, that's where I like them but if you system is stable, you aren't damaging your chip with these temps so don't be worried. Only suggestion would be to upgrade to a better thermal compound like Arctic Silver 3.

Theres something about the Asus A7A266... Me and my friend who both have this board are constantly 8-10C hotter than anyone else... Im running 52c under medium load right now on a 1.2ghz in an aluminum case...

get rid of the thermal pad......artic silver will bring you down 5c or more. you also might try lapping your h.s. 600 grit sandpaper on a flat surface for a few minutes will make a big difference.
