Am I ok with these temps on my 3800 X2?

Sorry for making another temperature thread, a quick search already came up with quite a few of them. But, my temps looked to be higher than the rest of the threads I looked at, around 45 idle, 60 load. I just put the system together today, and I remember the arctic silver instructions say temps will get better after a day or two (though personally, I've never actually seen that happen).

I'm a bit obsessive about noise, so I've only got 1 case fan blowing air out the back of the case (a p180), the cpu fan (setup is a xp-90 with a nexus 92mm fan on it), and the fan on my video card (a vf700). As long as 60 at load isn't dangerously high, I'd like to stick with this setup since it makes pretty much no noise.

You're fine but I would think the xp-90 should be doing a better job, even if you have only 1 fan for exhaust (an isn?t it 120mm?)

It is obvious case temps are effecting this....My system below running dual FH 24/7 right now doesn't load over 49c....I have same XP-90....I do have 2 intake fans (1 lower front) 1 lower side.....My case temps are only 2c over ambient room temp....

Fresh room air is key....stagnant air is warm and exhausting with no intake is just creating negative pressure...


Bottom Line I wouldn't like 60c at stock.....At stock speed I can undervolt to like 1.32v and the temps never go over 40c load...

Those temps used to be my temps with stock cooling and about 35C ambient temp in my room, but then i have 3 * 120mm, 3 * 80mm and one 140mm psu fans in my case and the case if fully holly so heat just rises through the holes in the top
But yea the xp90 should do better than that, maybe try to reseat the hsf.
Get more fans get larger slow spining ones which should work fine, The loudest thing in my comp is the 7800gt which even when u game 43% fan usage is louder than every other fan combined and i have over 7 fans

Seems a tad cozy, but shouldn't hurt the lifespan of the chip at all IMO.

I'd see what temps are like with the case side left open.
If they stay the same, i'd suggest attempting to reseat the heatsink to be sure.

Frankly, i don't get why more ppl don't just skip using case fans & just leave their cases open.

It's quieter like that, saves power, & temps are great

It is possible too that your mobo temp sensor is wrong.
My Neo2 was like that...always read about 8C higher that it actually was.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Abot taking the side off, I did, didn't really seem to make a difference. I'm going to leave prime 95 running overnight, so we'll see how its working in the morning.

I'm beginning to think maybe I should try reseating the xp90, I did have a bit of trouble getting it attached, might have spread the arctic silver around badly or something. I was just looking at a few reviews of it, does it matter how you have the xp90 aligned? Some reviewers seem to have it with the overhang going right/left like this (mine is like this, however the overhang part is over the ram on the right, with the cases 120mm fan right there, I don't think theres room to go ther other way), and some have it going up/down.

Also, if I've got to remove the xp90, I know to use some rubbing alcohol to clean it, but what about the CPU? I'm assuming no alcohol on it, just rub the old AS off?

Video card idles around 45, runs low to mid 50s under load (its a 7900gt).

Your ASUS board may be reporting higher temps. My friend has an ABIT AN8 Ultra and it reports very high temps as well. You should be fine - when in doubt worry about the voltage not the temperature. Are you under 1.5V?

Yeah, I've seen it anywhere between 1.28-1.35 (I'm using pc wizard to check all this btw). Should have mentioned in my post this morning, when I woke up prime 95 had been running for over 9 hours without problem.

One question I keep forgetting to ask, how hot should the x2 3800 be compred to a 3200+ ? Because I used the exact setup on it, and my temps were a lower (a degree or two at idle, but like 7 or 8 lower at load)

the x2 3800 should be a bit warmer as it is two cores on one chip compared to the single core a64 3200+. I think you should try reseating the heatsink, also make sure that your fan on the xp90 is pushing enough air. I have an x2 3800 @ 2.5ghz 1.4v that idles 30 and hits about 54 on full load, and my heatsink is much worse than an xp90. But then again like the other guy i have 7 fans

Reason is because its not quieter because u have nothing muffling the CPU fan and in fact its louder because sound echo's out to one side.

How can having a side pannel off save power? unless you have a fan attached to it, i dont see how u save power.

Its true temps are great, but if your wiring isnt a rats nest, and ur using a cross over wind pattern, the temp inside your case shouldnt be that much higher then room temp.

Lastly, because if your smart and use filters on your intake, ur monthly cleanup of the inside becomes significantly easier. PS, my insides rarely have dust bunnies lurking on capacitors. Im sure it helps with the grills on a cpu cooler too, but that i cant confirm since im h2o.

but yes follow his advice, open your case and take a retemp reading. If it stablizes then i suggest u do some major wiring. If the temps are still too high, your heatsink is missetted, too much artic silver, or improper mounting?

I have my 3800x2 overclocked to 2.4 using a xp90 with zalman 92mm. Even upon installation, my temps never ever rose beyond 55C under full load. Now it sits around 49C while running dual instances of F@H. I would check the ventilation in your case because 60C is where I would say DANGER. On another note........doesn't the xp90 look sexy?!
