Can someone help me with a Win2k SP1 problem??

Here we go...

I have a Dell Dimension XPST500 with a Maxtor 30gb drive that I installed.

Everything was working fine, but I decided to optimize my system.
I had win98, so I decided for a duel boot. formated an repartitoned my drive into 5.

c: win98 sys FAT32
d: win2k sys NTFS
e: win2k progs NTFS
f: win98 progs FAT32
g: storage FAT32

I also have an HP 8250i CRW drive and a generic cd-rom drive and a zip drive.
I bought a Promise Ultra66 card to increase IDE ports then decided that I would only need that for future use. So only the IOMEGA ZIP100 is running off that.

win98 installs fine. win2k installs fine. then I get to install the Service Pack 1 for win2k and the computer either freezes, or gives me the blue screen saying that I should run chkdsk or if it is the first time this has happened, restart. I got that a million times so far. I also made a Win2k sp1 slipstreamed bootable cd and tried that (by booting into win98 and running the setup from there, then deleting the NTFS partitions and recreating them and installing win2k there again). and I still get this blue screen!!
I also took out the Promise Card to see if that was causing a conflict. Still, same thing. but when I run win2k w/o sp1, everything work fine! Any idea why this is happening?? is it my setup? think I got a bum version of Win 2k (although my friend says that he got sp1 on his fine, and he has the exact same version.)

Any help?? this is really pissing me off. This is the 6th time I re-did win2k on my duel boot. And that is the os I use most!!

What is your hardware setup? Do you have any personal firewalls installed? What is the BSOD message?

What info do you need?

128 mb pc100 sdram, pIII 500 (not overclocked).
I think everything else I have is in the previous post. I am running zonealarm, but I don't see how that can muff things up when I blew away the NTFS partitions before re-installing?

oh, I'm on a cable modem with a linksysBFSRV41 router. sb live value, and a Viper 770d AGP.

Any help?

ok, first take out any unneccesary hardware...cdrw..zip drive...promise controller etc. then try and reinstall win2k, then do all of the critical updates, then do the sp1 and see if that helps. many times win2k has a problem installing sp1 with a cdrw. good luck

It seems as if win2k doesn't like my hard drive with the sp1....

Can anyone tell which of the Critical updates are really critcal? I am looking for security mostly...

If I can't do sp1, I would like to be able to have my sys at least be secure. win2k w/o sp1 still works fine for me, I just want to make sure.

The problem is, I didn't write it down and I re-installed win2k. I am not getting the message now, but it's guarenteed that if I try to install sp1 again, that I am going to get thi message. The message has something to do with

If this is the first time you received this message, restart and try again.
Try running checkdisk. I think it says something about my hard drive in there and it being corrupt. My harddive is not corrupt. I ran many utils and when I re-install, everything works fine. The times I got the message is when I try to install sp1network.exe or to re-install with my slipstreamed win2k bootable with sp1network.exe slipstreamed into the win2k directory. so I know it's sp1network.

Also, I tried to install the sp1 package from the internet (I'm on cable) through the Windows update. That stopped in the middle, told me my connections was lost (my connections has yet to be lost since I got my cable 2 months ago) and then shut down. After it shut down, I restarted it and it gave me the bsod I have been seeing eversince. can you tell anything or do you need the actual message? when I will get time, I will mess up my sys again (hell, I've done it enough), and write down the bsod message. But that seems like a pretty crappy idea. Any help from this???????

Ok, I tried again and got the same problem...

I took out my promise card and was running 2kpro w/o sp1 for a week before this happened.

I tried to run the repair... it worked, but then my cable modem wouldn't connect and my winver says SP1, but the repair overwrote all the files. so I don't have SP1...

I get the same error with Adv Server...
must be hardware... anyone??

Ok. First thing. I would create a Windows 98 boot disk and boot off of that. When you are at the prompt, type in FDISK /MBR. I know that there are some issues that the Master Boot Record can get changed, and Windows 2000 does not like that. In most cases, it is because of a third-party cloning software util, but your problem is very wierd. If that does not work, what type of IDE/SCSI controller do you have?

Third party cloning util??? you mean like ghost?? I ghosted my win98 partition when I first made the machine. I had a ghost image on cd so I made the win98 c: partition from that, then I ran the setup for win2k and did a clean install onto D: (NTFS) Do you think that could have done it?? what will I lost if I FDISK /MBR ???

Sorry that I haven't replied in a few days, but using the util FDISK with the switch MBR will repair the Master Boot Record on the hard drive that is the Active boot device. It will only repair the MBR, and not touch anything else. What you can also do is boot off of the Windows 2000 Pro CD, and do a repair. Before you actually do the repair, I would make an ERD (Emergency Repair Disk) by going to the Windows NT Backup program, and selecting Make An ERD. Once you have the ERD, then insert the CD and go into the Repair mode.

the ERD didn't work. I also tried the "fixmbr" in the 2k repair console...

nothing there either...

any suggestions?

p.s I already booted to a 98 floppy and did the fdisk /mbr...
